IPC seeks clarity on child protection laws

Africa-Press – Namibia.

Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) parliamentarian, Lucia Mbuti, is set to question the Minister of Gender, Equality and Child Welfare in the National Assembly on Thursday on the government’s child protection laws. This, she said, follows a recent double tragedy in the north where two children were allegedly killed by their father, who also attempted to strangle their mother.

The shocking case has sparked outrage and renewed fears about the vulnerability of children in homes affected by domestic violence.

Mbuti said the incident calls into question the effectiveness of official actions aimed at protecting children, citing Article 15 of the Namibian Constitution, which provides every child protection from abuse. She announced she will demand answers from the minister regarding the apparent gaps in the system.

“Why were the children not placed under protective custody after their father’s violent behaviour?” Mbuti will ask. She also intends to press for clarity on what protocols child protection officers and social workers are required to follow in cases of domestic violence.

The IPC MP also wants to know how many child protection officers are working in the country right now, if the ministry can handle high-risk situations well, and how many child deaths have been connected to domestic abuse in the last several years.

Her parliamentary questions are expected to add pressure on the ministry to explain its strategies and outline reforms to strengthen child protection nationwide.

The point will be discussed in Parliament on Thursday, 25 September 2025.
