THE Minister of Education, Sanet Steenkamp, has officially launched the Department of Digital Arts and Animation (DAA) at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) – a milestone she described as a testament to the Namibian Government’s commitment to taking creativity seriously.
“Earlier this year, in her State of the Nation Address, Her Excellency Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah outlined seven national priorities. This department speaks directly to three of them: empowering our youth, strengthening the quality of education and training, and expanding our creative industries,” Steenkamp said.

She further noted that the initiative also aligns with the objectives of the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), which emphasises the need for skills that are relevant, innovative, and competitive on a global scale.
“The launch aligns with our national development agenda. The Sixth National Development Plan calls for skills that are relevant, innovative, and globally competitive. The Namibia Arts, Culture, and Heritage Policy (2025–2030) highlights the importance of integrating cultural and creative expression with education and economic opportunity. These are not just policies on paper — they are about creating real opportunities for our young people,” the minister explained.
Steenkamp affirmed the Ministry’s continued commitment to such transformative initiatives, pledging to foster a policy and funding environment that enables the creative sector to flourish. She revealed plans to broaden training opportunities, reinforce partnerships, and advocate for the creative industries as a vital part of Namibia’s educational and economic strategies.
“The establishment of this department resonates deeply with the long-held dreams of many Namibians to use their creative talents to tell their stories, preserve heritage, and participate meaningfully in the cultural and creative sector,” Steenkamp added.
