WINDHOEK Mayor, Her Worship Ndeshihafela Larandja, has called for stronger recognition and support of Namibia’s cultural heritage following a visit to the Creative Industry Institute Africa.

The institute, founded by filmmaker Joel Haikali, plays a pivotal role in empowering creatives to tell stories rooted in history, culture, and heritage. It works with artists to transform cultural narratives into products and services that are both inspiring and economically viable.

During her tour, Mayor Larandja was introduced to the institute’s collection of costumes, artefacts, and heritage items preserved for use in film production. The institute also functions as a resource centre and hub for research, creativity, and knowledge-sharing, contributing to Namibia’s cultural identity and creative economy.

While commending the institute’s achievements, the Mayor raised concerns about the lack of recognition and support it has received from government and political leaders. “The Creative Industry Institute Africa is doing remarkable work in safeguarding our cultural heritage while also creating opportunities in film, tourism, and the broader creative sector. It is essential that we support and strengthen such initiatives,” she said.

Mayor Larandja further expressed her commitment to exploring partnerships between the City of Windhoek and the institute, particularly through the City’s Tourism, Art, and Culture initiatives. She added that steps would be taken to draft a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure structured collaboration.

The visit underscores the City of Windhoek’s recognition of the creative sector as a key driver of cultural preservation, tourism development, and economic growth.
