Africa-Press – Namibia. The Home of Good Hope, a non-profit organisation that began as a humble soup kitchen in 2007, celebrated a significant milestone, yesterday with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new development centre in Goreangab, Katutura.
The event marks a major step towards the organisation’s mission to provide holistic support to vulnerable children and youth in Windhoek.
Home of Good Hope was founded by Monica Imanga, and has expanded from providing meals, education, healthcare, and emotional support to 48 children every day, to now serving over 1,200 children every day.
These services will further be expanded by the new development centre, which is scheduled to open in December and function as a complete centre for community support.
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Monica Imanga, Founder and Executive Director, alongside Bernd Bauer, CEO of Discover Airlines, one of the centre’s international partners.
Representatives from the Foundation Home of Good Hope (Netherlands), Germany’s Dr. Nikolaus Koppen Stiftung, and Home of Good Hope Netherlands were among the other supporters present.
“The construction of this centre is the realisation of a long-held dream,” Imanga said. “Home of Good Hope has grown into a vibrant hub of community support. I appreciate our team’s dedication, as well as that of our international donors and sponsors. We look forward to seeing our vision come to life at the new site,” she added.
The new facility, located at 87 Monica Street, Goreangab, will include a large dining hall, classrooms for pre-school education and homework assistance, a fully equipped kitchen and food storage areas, accommodation for at-risk teenage mothers and their children.
The facility will also include a computer room, and a healthcare clinic providing general health checks, dental and eye care, and psychological support to children, parents, and the broader community.
“For us, it’s an emotional moment. We have collaborated closely with Monica and her team since 2021. Today, we witness the outcome of passion and hard work. This innovative project is only the start of many more efforts to help underprivileged children and communities,” Bauer stated.
Home of Good Hope Netherlands, Chairperson, Maria de Wal said, “In 2010 we visited Monica Imanga’s soup kitchen for the first time. We were directly involved with the vulnerable and oh so brave children of Goreangab. In our ongoing support we greatly appreciate the direct contact with our sister organisation Home of Good Hope in Namibia. The contact with Monica is special and we really appreciate it.”
Quelin Gereses of the Saamstaan Housing Cooperation also spoke at the occasion, praising Imanga strength and vision.
“It was evident that Monica had a dream when we first saw this desolate area. In order to provide a place of hope, care, and opportunity for the kids and the larger community, she has persisted through obstacles and disappointments,” Gereses said.
Imanga shared a personal account of her journey, revealing that the Home of Good Hope was inspired by the loss of her daughter to HIV/AIDS. She recounted how she began by feeding 45 HIV-positive children and gradually expanded to include educational support, healthcare, and emotional care for children from across Namibia, many of whom arrive with no formal documentation or prior education.
In order to help families, develop the ability to care for themselves, the Home of Good Hope has offered adult education programs and supported higher education for eligible individuals over the years.
Imanga highlighted the importance of love and commitment to the organisation’s success, pointing out that donors and volunteers have been crucial to maintaining its expansion.
The new centre represents a transformative step in the organisation’s mission to uplift the Katutura community and provide vulnerable children with opportunities to thrive.
The Home of Good Hope remains a beacon of hope and a model for community-driven social development in Namibia thanks to the efforts of foreign benefactors, local volunteers, and committed employees.
