Africa-Press – Namibia. Vice President Lucia Witbooi emphasised that every Namibian child deserves access to quality education, regardless of their background or where they live.

Witbooi made the remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony for the development project of the Suiderlig Secondary School (her Alma Mata) in the southern town over the weekend.

“Today, after a previous highly successful gala dinner, we return not only to remember but to rebuild, and not only to honour the past but to shape the future,” she said.

“What we are involved in is not just a school improvement project; it is fundamentally a national investment in dignity, safety and equal opportunity for a Namibian child.”

Vividly recalling her childhood memories, Witbooi expressed that, as a proud product of the school, she stood there with humility and deep emotion.

“These sacred grounds have shaped me, and these classrooms have sharpened my thinking,” she shared.

Recognising corporate partners such as Namport, Debmarine, Anglo American, Sola Kwetu, and former Ohangwena governor Usko Nghaamwa, Witbooi said their contributions demonstrate that investing in educational infrastructure is not solely the government’s responsibility but a shared duty among all stakeholders.

“I will, therefore, urge you, together with the Keetmanshoop and //Kharas region’s inhabitants to protect this infrastructure and cultivate a culture of stewardship, respect and pride,” said the Vice President.

Sanet Steenkamp, Minister of Education, said the project for the fence and hostel is part of a coordinated effort to create a safe, dignified and well-resourced learning environment.

“The responsibility of educating and protecting our children is a collective one, and I am, therefore, calling on the private sector, development partners, community leaders and individuals to come on board,” said the minister.

In his welcoming remarks, regional education director Nicolaas Eiman, said the ceremony highlights the importance of the project and further recognises the efforts of those who helped make it possible.

“I am hereby urging the management of the directorate and school, along with regional leadership, to continue providing essential oversight, guidance and support to initiatives that benefit our learners,” he emphasised.

On behalf of the learners, Head Boy Remind Wanailongo expressed their heartfelt appreciation to all sponsors who have contributed to the school in any capacity.

“It is also comforting to know that our business community cares for us whilst our government is there to support us,” he said.
