Africa-Press – Namibia. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on all Namibians to take road safety seriously, stressing that alert driving and well-maintained vehicles are crucial for reducing accidents and protecting lives.
Speaking on Monday at the State House while commissioning three new Task Forces, the President said Namibia is one of the countries with the best roads.
“Namibia has the best roads, one of the best roads in our continent and beyond. Let us really make sure that the space for our roads is a safe space for everybody,” she said. Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged Namibians to take personal responsibility on the roads, saying that alert driving and well-prepared vehicles are essential for safety and national progress.
“Each one of us must play our part to make sure that we prepare our vehicles properly and we are alert when we are driving,” the President said during the commissioning of three national task forces at State House.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah linked road safety to national progress, saying that fewer accidents would free up resources for healthcare, housing, and economic recovery. “As the patron of the road to success in Namibia, this is the season that I am dreaming that one day we will come out with significantly reduced accidents so that the resources we are spending can be spent on issues of common interest to us, particularly on our economic recovery, quality health services, and dignified accommodation for all Namibians,” she said. She thanked the task force members and wished the nation well for the festive season.
“Maybe this will be the last time we meet until next year. Let me also wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” she said.
Namibia has recorded 2,793 road crashes, which resulted in 431 fatalities and 4,565 injuries from 1 January 2025 until 10 November 2025.
This was revealed by the works and transport minister Veikko Nekundi at the inauguration of the Okapuka checkpoint a week ago. In a speech on behalf of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Nekundi said annually, 500 lives are lost on the national roads.
“It is indeed heartbreaking to see so many productive citizens perish on our roads, leaving loved ones with unbearable hurt and sorrow, and often bringing hardship to the welfare of our families,” he said. Nekundi called on all Namibians to take personal responsibility for their safety and that of others.
