Africa-Press – Namibia. Despite disappointing results during the just ended regional and Local elections, social activist Shaun Gariseb has vowed to continue fighting for people’s rights and dignity.

During the election last week, Gariseb contested the Katutura Central constituency, where he ran as an independent candidate. The constituency that was won by PDM’s Rodman Katjaimo. However, Gariseb said the results don’t define what he stands for.

“How can I stop my calling; we will continue fighting for the people and their dignity. Our mission is service delivery, and we will continue to fight for the people of Katutura and the surrounding areas to ensure what they have been fighting for is restored,” he said.

“Going forward, we will continue fighting for the people, to ensure that people voted in power are held accountable, and also ensure that justice for our people is served. This Monday, we intend to have a press conference with the pensioners,” he said.

Prominence for his grassroots engagement and activism, he said, the election taught him a lot of lessons – some positive and some negative.

“We learned so much from the political space, which I don’t want to be part of. However, it was fulfilling to see how many people got inspired to vote, also seeing so many voters from outside, wanting to vote for us,” he said.

“But also, I have learnt that so much needs to be done, especially with the younger generation in terms of voting, they need to be educated on the importance of voting. A lot of them still don’t understand why voting is such a crucial thing to do,” he added.

Meanwhile, Association for Localised Interests (Asoli)’s Josef Kauandenge, said he is positive about staying in the political arena after his party failed to make it in the City of Windhoek. “We are going to reflect on what transpired during the election, and get to know what happened for us to not make the local council.”

He said, although, they didn’t get what they had hoped for, he is positive with the number of youth that turned up for election.

“We had so many youth in our camp, and I am happy with how much they were keen on voting. Heading forward, we would advise them to vote and educate themselves on the importance of voting,” he said.
