President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will officially open the Third Session of the Eighth Parliament today.

This momentous event will be held under the theme, ‘Enhancing the role of Parliament for inclusive development and participatory democracy’.

National Assembly spokesperson Sakeus Kadhikwa yesterday said the preparations were all on track, including the military parade preparation that took place yesterday morning.

He noted that there was no official opening last year due to the eighth administration being sworn in March.

“According to the Constitution and the standing rules of Parliament, the official opening should actually take place on the first Tuesday of the official opening of Parliament, which is always in February,” he noted.

Some of the bills that will potentially be tabled during the Parliament sessions of 2026 are the Public Enterprises and Governance Amendment Bill, the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Amendment Bill, the Land Bill, the Mental Health Bill, the Regional Councils Amendment Bill, the Public Accountants and Auditors Bill and the Income Tax Amendment Bill.

Kadhikwa said the Parliament’s opening will include a Guard of Honour, featuring a military parade and a 21-gun salute.

He noted that the Land Bill, Mental Health Bill and Regional Council Amendment Bill are also among the bills to be introduced.

Two other bills awaiting presentation are the Public Accounts and Auditors (2024) Bill and the Income Tax Amendment Bill, which are also anticipated to be finalised next month.

These bills are expected to be introduced in the National Assembly during the 2026 legislative year.

“However, this is contingent upon their finalisation by the Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations,” Kadhikwa stated.
