Africa-Press – Namibia. NAMIBIA has lost a distinguished liberation fighter and national leader with the passing of former Minister Erkki Nghimtina at his home in Edundja village, Ohangwena Region. He was 78.
Defence and Veterans Affairs Minister Frans Kapofi described Nghimtina as an outstanding leader whose contributions were pivotal in Namibia’s struggle for independence and the subsequent development of the nation. “He was one of the fighters who dedicated their youth to the liberation struggle. We have lost someone outstanding,” Kapofi said, offering condolences to the family and the nation.
Retired Lieutenant General Martin Shalli recalled his decades-long association with Nghimtina, noting that they both left Namibia in 1974 to join the liberation struggle and trained in the former Soviet Union. Shalli highlighted Nghimtina’s significant role in the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), particularly in military communications, and his contribution to establishing the communications department of the Namibian Defence Force after independence.
Nghimtina served in various ministerial positions, including Defence, Works and Transport, Mines and Energy, and Labour and Industrial Relations. His career reflected both his dedication to the liberation struggle and his ongoing contribution to Namibia’s development post-independence.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues, veterans, and the public, reflecting Nghimtina’s enduring legacy as both a freedom fighter and a national leader.
