Africa-Press – Namibia. THE National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) marked two decades of service and officially inaugurated its new headquarters in Windhoek, with Vice President Lucia Witbooi calling for a higher education system that is globally competitive, locally relevant and socially just.
The milestone event celebrated the 20th anniversary of the National Council for Higher Education and the opening of its new building. Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Dino Ballotti, accompanied the Vice President and introduced her as the keynote speaker.
In her address, Witbooi said the occasion not only marked two decades of the Council’s work, but also the naming of the building in honour of the late Zedekia Josef Ngavirue, the founding chairperson of the Council from 2006 to 2011, in recognition of his visionary leadership.
She reaffirmed the importance of strengthening higher education through transformation, excellence and sustainable national development, and highlighted the NCHE’s mandate to provide strategic direction, advise on funding priorities and oversee quality assurance in higher education institutions.
Witbooi also underscored the Council’s collaborative role with key statutory bodies and commended education agencies under the leadership of Sanet Steenkamp for improving coordination and system integration across the sector.
Calling for continued commitment to reform and progress, the Vice President said advancing a strong higher education system would honour Ngavirue’s legacy and help position Namibia for future growth.
The event was attended by former Speaker of the National Assembly Peter Katjavivi, former health minister Kalumbi Shangula, leaders from public and private higher education institutions, representatives of public enterprises, regulatory and professional bodies, current and former NCHE members, and members of the Ngavirue family.
