Africa-Press – Namibia. Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka on Monday announced that the central government has officially greenlit a massive N$108 million injection to tackle Rundu’s Tutungeni suburb’s dangerous stormwater and erosion crises.

This is in response to the growing sinkholes that have threatened to swallow homes and vital infrastructure in the riverfront town.

“We got a message last week that our request and quotations regarding the stormwater disasters are being considered by the central government. By Friday, we were informed that everything had been approved, and we were given a copy of the award letter that the tender was awarded to (CHICO) China Henan International Cooperation Group Co. Ltd. Work has now commenced,’’ said Hambyuka.

This follows a visit by Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa, who recently stood at the edge of the widening chasms in Rundu.

At the time, Sankwasa declared the situation a national emergency, bypassing standard bureaucratic red tape.

“The situation will be attended to as an emergency,” Sankwasa had assured residents, on the condition that the Rundu Town Council moved with speed to submit technical quotations.

The council responded with urgency.

An earlier report by New Era on the technical plan indicates that it involves the construction of a robust underground canal system and the stabilisation of the slopes leading toward the Kavango River.

“For the people of Tutungeni, this isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about safety. As the rainy season looms, the N$108 million commitment offers a sense of security that has been missing for far too long. I’m happy that the government has responded swiftly; here we are, the problem is being attended to,” said the Rundu mayor Andreas Jikerwa.
