Africa-Press – Namibia. The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development says the swearing in of newly elected regional council and local authority councillors has been cancelled.
This is contained in a circular dated 28 November, issued by executive director Wilhelmine Shivute and addressed to chief regional officers and chief executive officers.
“Your office is hereby informed that the swearing-in ceremony of all newly elected political office-bearers on 3 December has been cancelled with immediate effect,” the circular reads.
Shivute says a new date for the swearing in of new councillors will be communicated in due course.
The reason for the cancellation has not been indicated and the announcement of results is still ongoing.
So far, only 81 regional constituencies’ results have been announced and 45 local authorities.
The cancellation comes amid the ongoing magistrates’ strike.
The Namibian this week reported that minister of urban and rural development James Sankwasa could appoint administrators countrywide if new councillors are not sworn in by next week.
