Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>The government will have to bear the burden of feeding residents of the flood- and locust outbreak-affected Zambezi region until the next harvesting season.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was said by minister of urban and rural development James Sankwasa.<\/p>\n

Annual floods, flash floods and locust outbreaks currently experienced in the Zambezi region have wiped out thousands of hectares of crop fields in the region, resulting in families facing starvation as they are left with nothing to harvest.<\/p>\n

The Zambezi region is currently experiencing devastating floods, especially in the Kabbe South and Kabbe North constituencies, leaving villages, schools, clinics and roads under water.<\/p>\n

These floods have displaced families, with over 2 000 people relocated to nine camps.<\/p>\n

The Zambezi River level stands at 6.89m at Katima Mulilo.<\/p>\n

Sankwasa, who went to assess the situation in the region last week, says the region\u2019s food security has been left in a dire state by these disasters.<\/p>\n

He adds that the government must look into how they can feed affected residents until they can become self-sufficient again.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople\u2019s fields have been submerged by water, leaving them with nothing to harvest. The government must go beyond the feeding of the affected residents in the relocation camps. These people will need seeds for the next ploughing season. Although the government cannot take up all the support for the victims, it needs to take up the bigger portion. The cattle are also badly affected, as there\u2019s no grazing land for them. Therefore, the government must provide fodder for them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Sankwasa notes that part of his 50-hectare crop fields has been submerged by water and infested with locusts, even though the crops are not yet ready for harvest.<\/p>\n

Three schools in the floodplains, namely Muzii Combined School, Nankuntwe Combined School and Mpukano Primary School, have been closed for the past two weeks and will resume classes today following the relocation.<\/p>\n

Zambezi regional education director Alex Sikume told The Namibian yesterday that the three schools account for 520 pupils and 35 staff, all of whom were relocated along with their furniture during the Easter break.<\/p>\n

He added that pupils and staff from Muzii and Mpukano have been relocated to the Lusese area, while those from Nankuntwe have been moved to Schuckmannsburg.<\/p>\n

\u201cClasses will resume for these schools, along with the other schools, after the long weekend. We are monitoring the other flood-affected schools, and if the need arises for any of them to be relocated, then we will act swiftly,\u201d Sikume said.<\/p>\n

The Tulipohamba Training and Assessment Institute donated a consignment of essential food and hygiene items worth N$85 000 to support flood-affected communities in the region last week.<\/p>\n

The donation includes 100 bags of 10kg maize meal, 100 units of 10kg sugar and 100 bottles of 4-litre cooking oil. In addition, 300 units of 1-litre milk, canned beans and canned fish have been provided to help address immediate food needs.<\/p>\n

They also donated 100 units of 2kg washing powder, 300 bars of soap, 100 body lotions, 100 packets of 500g salt, 300 sanitary pads and 100 packs of toilet paper.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Office of the Prime Minister has provided the region with 60 tents, 50 mattresses, 50 blankets, 104 bottles of cooking oil, 663 tins of fish and bags of rice.<\/p>\n
