{"id":101577,"date":"2026-05-19T19:58:31","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:58:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/okashana-farmers-in-sustainable-poultry-production"},"modified":"2026-05-19T19:58:31","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:58:31","slug":"okashana-farmers-in-sustainable-poultry-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/okashana-farmers-in-sustainable-poultry-production","title":{"rendered":"Okashana farmers in\u00a0sustainable poultry production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OMUTHIYA \u2013 The Okashana Rural Development Centre in the Omuthiya constituency, Oshikoto region, has successfully conducted a two-day poultry farming training programme to empower local farmers with practical knowledge and skills in sustainable poultry production.<\/p>\n<p>During the sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, participants learned about various natural remedies for preventing and controlling common chicken diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The centre\u2019s senior community liaison officer, Tangi Mwandingi, emphasised the value of these locally driven solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing locally available herbs and traditional methods helps improve poultry\u2019s health while reducing dependence on expensive medication,\u201d Mwandingi said.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers received comprehensive training in proper hygiene practices, balanced feeding techniques, and maintaining clean poultry shelters to prevent disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>The programme placed strong emphasis on accurate record-keeping.<\/p>\n<p>Participants learned how to maintain detailed records of expenses, feed consumption, vaccination schedules, sales and overall production performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProper record-keeping helps farmers monitor profits and losses, improve decision-making and build sustainable poultry businesses,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The training covered key principles of poultry farming, including different breeds, breeding systems, production types, housing designs, equipment needs, feeds and supplements, egg handling, incubation and hatching techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Special attention was given to common poultry diseases and conditions, including Newcastle disease, Gumboro (infectious bursal disease), infectious coryza, infectious bronchitis, fowl pox, stress, and both internal and external parasites.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were advised on biosecurity measures, vaccination schedules and sustainable management of poultry waste.<\/p>\n<p>Trainers stressed practical treatment protocols \u2013 sick birds require antibiotics rather than vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>All other water sources must be removed until medicated water is fully consumed.<\/p>\n<p>Medicated water should be freshly prepared every 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Sick birds must be isolated.<\/p>\n<p>Cases should be reported to the nearest veterinarian.<\/p>\n<p>Eggs or birds must not be sold or consumed before the withdrawal period ends.<\/p>\n<p>Mwandingi maintained that poultry farming is a profitable and sustainable agribusiness venture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt enjoys high demand, is easy and cheap to manage, provides income opportunities for communities, and contributes to the goals of Vision 2030 and the National Development Plans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The centre continues to offer technical support and capacity-building initiatives to promote community empowerment through agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Nampa<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OMUTHIYA \u2013 The Okashana Rural Development Centre in the Omuthiya constituency, Oshikoto region, has successfully conducted a two-day poultry farming training programme to empower local farmers with practical knowledge and skills in sustainable poultry production.
