Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>EX-POLICE officer Tobias Shaanika Shikongo (62) and his son Junias Taauly Shikongo (26) from the Onaanda village were arrested alongside two other men by police in the Omusati region, for allegedly stealing 29 cows belonging to the University of Namibia’s (Unam) Ogongo campus.<\/b><\/p>\n

They appeared in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court earlier this week and were remanded in custody. Their case was postponed to 31 March, for further police investigations.<\/p>\n

According to Omusati regional commander commissioner Titus Shikongo, the other two suspects are Shekutamba Junias Nashima (35) and Sakaria Nashima (30) from the Okagongo village.<\/p>\n

It was reported last month that 29 cows, including six big calves and 17 newborn calves were stolen from the Ogongo Unam campus’ camps.<\/p>\n

The police managed to recover 24 cows – 17 newborn calves and five big calves – while two cows allegedly died one while giving birth, and the other was shot while running away.<\/p>\n

The suspects later slaughtered the shot cow and sold the meat at Onaanda.<\/p>\n

The sixth big calf allegedly went missing.<\/p>\n

The cattle were recovered from different places such as Uuvudhiya in the Oshana region, as well as Elim and Okahao constituencies in the Omusati region, commissioner Shikongo said.<\/p>\n

These allegations are being verified through further investigations, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome cattle were rebranded and had the ear tags forcefully removed. Some of their ear tags and branding irons used were recovered and kept as exhibits.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the recovered livestock were transported back to Unam’s Ogongo campus, where they were handed over.<\/p>\n
