Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>FORMER Windhoek mayor Fransina Kahungu has pleaded with the city’s current coalition-run administration to set their personal differences aside and focus on their civic responsibilities.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAllow me to express reservation on the faith,\u201d she told Desert Radio 95.3 FM yesterday when asked whether she had faith in the current municipal structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll councillors are representatives of various political parties. All these political parties have a mission to achieve.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore we all have to strive to work together for the benefit of all those who sent us there, because in the end we all have one aim, and that is to provide residents with municipal services,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

While noting that the municipality was able to build houses with electricity during her tenure and issue certificates of land occupation, she said more can be done.<\/p>\n

More funds for local authorities would help, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirstly, the government has to add more funds to local authorities, not only Windhoek, so that serviced land is available. Take note, people are currently residing on land that is not serviced.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecondly, the municipality has to review its processes of providing land. Thirdly, we have to work together in partnership with the community so that we can come up with ways to fast-track the servicing of land,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kahungu said it is important that the municipality establish a database to better regulate land occupation and servicing.<\/p>\n

She also discussed her ambition to take up the secretarial seat of the Swapo Party Women’s Council.<\/p>\n

Kahungu, who is the current deputy secretary of the council, is one of two candidates nominated to contest for the secretary position at the wing’s elective congress later this month.<\/p>\n

Having served as the assistant secretary for finance and project management for the wing between 2011 and 2016, as well as being the deputy since 2016, she is confident that this experience would make her the best fit for the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat gives me full insight on what can be done or where I can build on. If I become secretary, of course, I will continue implementing as requested by the women’s council constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is my aim and purpose to uplift women in various spheres. To be specific, I would like to empower women . . . create opportunities for women so they are empowered economically.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to promote financial literacy and financial management to help women \u2013 specifically those in small to medium enterprises,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kahungu also hopes to make the list of delegates to attend Swapo’s elective congress scheduled for November this year.<\/p>\n

When probed about her thoughts on the ruling party’s image amid public scrutiny and links to corruption, Kahungu was reluctant to comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Swapo party member, I am not convinced for Swapo to be linked to corruption to be true. It is not true because it is not proven.\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She said the party is doing well as reflected by the success of the Swapo-led government.<\/p>\n
