In particular, he wants to know “which vote from the ministry’s budget was the trip paid for”.

He also asked if the journey was undertaken with the approval of the ministry. Most notably, he wants Tjongarero to affirm that there is no bad blood between herself and her deputy “that is badly impacting the mandate entrusted upon them in the ministry”.

The office of the executive director of sport, youth and national service, Audrin Mathe, gave contrasting responses about the trip when fielding queries from The Namibian last week, leading Martin to highlight inconsistencies and secrecy surrounding the expedition.

Initially, the ministry said it had not sent any of its employees to Cameroon, “and has no plans to do so in the future”. Mathe then said the deputy minister went to the West African nation on a “sport development and cooperation mission” at the invitation of the Confederation of African Football.

Kantema-Gaomas held “preliminary discussions for Namibia’s envisaged bid to co-host the continental tournament in 2027 with the Republic of Botswana” with several prominent football personalities, Mathe said.

“This response by the ministry is very concerning. When one interprets that response at face value, it becomes very clear that there are fundamental problems within the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, and these contradictions directly contribute to the fracas we have been witnessing in our sport fraternity,” said Martin.

“That response also supports the narrative that has been doing the rounds that there are ongoing power scuffles and a breakdown in communication between the minister and the deputy minister in the ministry, which should be of fundamental concern to all of us.”

Kantema-Gaomas’ personal assistant (PA), Ricardo Goagoseb, and Namibia Sport Commission chief administrator Freddy Mwiya formed part of the delegation, Mathe said.

CAF paid for the accommodation of the deputy minister, he said. However, it is unclear who covered Mwiya’s expenses and the travelling costs of the deputy minister and her PA.

The exercise, which, despite being about football matters, excluded the Namibia Football Association, is said to have cost the government about N$500 000.

While Botswana’s government has backed the joint bid, The Namibian Sport has it on good authority that the Cabinet has not instructed the ministry to act on the proposal.

The expedition to consult with the latest hosts and lobby support has been kept under wraps because the situation demands keeping one’s cards close to their chest, Mwiya said.

“We did not say anything about the trip because sometimes it is better not to publicise your plans when you’re working on a project of this magnitude,” he said. Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia have also registered their interest in hosting the 36th edition of the continental showpiece.

For More News And Analysis About Namibia Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Namibia.
