Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>LEARNERS at the Otjisokotjovanga Kindergarten in the Opuwo Constituency of the Kunene Region have deserted their classrooms to help their parents in the crop fields and to look after livestock following the good rainfall in the area. The kindergarten caters to the Ovahimba and Ovazemba communities where schooling is not a priority.<\/p>\n

The founder of Otjisokotjovanga Kindergarten, Arminda Hepute, said that the school\u2019s enrolment this year was 28 children, but only 15 are attending classes. The other 13 have opted out to assist their parents in the crop fields or to look after livestock.<\/p>\n

According to Hepute, the school was established to bring education closer to the community but it now appears that the community has other priorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe established the school after noticing that many children were either looking after livestock or sitting at home doing nothing,\u201d she said, pointing out that it started under a tree but a proper shelter has now been provided. The school has also received stationery worth N$ 3 000 from the Kunene Green Foundation.<\/p>\n

Hepute, who was overwhelmed by joy, said that the donation given to Otjisokotjovanga Kindergarten is an effort towards assisting them in its pursuit to deliver quality early education to children from underprivileged communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stationeries will be used accordingly to ensure that the children get the best early child education foundation,\u201d she said. She added that she hopes more donors will follow suit in assisting them with the little they can to grow their service.<\/p>\n
