Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Mariental mayor Adam Kuhlman has resigned.<\/b><\/p>\n

Kuhlman tendered his resignation on Thursday at an ordinary council meeting. He was serving as a member of the Landless People’s Movement (LPM). Kuhlman said as a councilor, his objective was for the development of town and its’ people and not engaging in inner-party politics.<\/p>\n

Kuhlman was also the chairperson of the Mayors and Chairpersons Forum established last year at the town to support local authorities in delivering land, acquiring financing for development and supporting municipalities with human resources and equipment, among others.<\/p>\n

He becomes the first member of LPM to resign out of his own accord without being recalled. LPM has recalled up to six councilors so far for multiple accusations.<\/p>\n

Kuhlman said in a statement read to the councilors that he is being accused by the top leadership of aiding his personal assistant in subverting the Landless Peoples’ Movement and trying to remove the party’s leader Bernadus Swartbooi and his deputy Henny Seibeb.<\/p>\n

Kuhlman said he received a text message from Swartbooi on 12 of February accusing him of conspiring with aiming to destroy the Landless Peoples’ Movement.<\/p>\n

LPM acting national spokesperson Eneas Emvula said Kuhlman was invited on 12 February to a meeting with the national leadership of the LPM in Windhoek. Emvula said the meeting was set up with the founding national executive and affected parties for Kuhlman to clear up the allegations against him of aiding his personal assistant.<\/p>\n

However, Emvula says the former mayor did not show up to clear his name. \u201cAs a leader, accusations will always come your way. But it is up to you as a leader to pitch and explain whether the allegations are true or to prove why you say it is not true. But Kuhlman did not show up for that said meeting,\u201d said the spokesperson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very sad then that almost a month down the line this is what the former mayor purports as the reason for resigning as he had the opportunity to clear this up. He should include that also in his statement to prove that he has a clear conscience and is telling the truth,\u201d said Emvula.<\/p>\n

Meamwhile, Kuhlman says that smearing and name calling has become the norm in the Landless Peoples’ Movement. He said the party accusations are a clear indication on how the top leadership acts on insinuations and rumours to tarnish his image.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I, with a clear conscience, state that the accusations are devoid of any truth and is an attempt to tarnish my name and reputation. I will protect my family name and reputation at all costs, even though I am sure the truth will prevail,\u201d said Kuhlman.<\/p>\n

He added that it is clear his relationship of trust with fellow councilors and the top leadership has broken down. He said he will no longer be able to serve as a councilor or mayor on the LPM ticket.<\/p>\n
