Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>SPECIAL Olympics Namibia (SON) recently celebrated the refurbishment of its sport facilities at the Katutura Football for Hope Centre in Windhoek.<\/b><\/p>\n

To mark the occasion, SON held a sport day with its stakeholders. Vandalism has left the premises in a desperate state, making it difficult for SON to fulfil its objectives as the facility was not safe for athletes. The makeover consists of a new security fence and the general upgrade of the property.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe participation in activities for people with disabilities at this centre will not only contribute to the health and welfare of a person with intellectual disabilities, but will reduce the stigma attached to them,\u201d Emilia Nzuzi, SON’s national executive director, said at the event.<\/p>\n

With the intervention of the Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), funding and expertise was sourced which enabled the refurbishment of the grounds. Nzuzi said they can now focus on the continued development of the movement in the country.<\/p>\n

Namibia is gearing up for the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games set for Berlin, in Germany, which is slated to run from 17 to 24 June, and the 2022 Unify Football Cup in Chicago, in the United States, in July.<\/p>\n

The Special Olympics is not just about sport, Nzuzi said. It educates people on health and community-based activities, as well as provides training on the development of athletes. Engagement on nutrition, safeguarding children and athletes, and inspiring those with intellectual disabilities are other aims.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiving people with intellectual disabilities the same opportunities as others is essential. The pride that comes from participating in sport and other uplifting events is immense and a joy to behold,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Primarily, the mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sport training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sport codes for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n

This provides them with opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and to participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships, Nzuzi said.<\/p>\n

Deputy director for the marginalised and women in sport, Jo-ann Manuel, said the upgrade is a much-needed deterrence of those who intend to vandalise the centre.<\/p>\n

She urged all stakeholders, especially the local community, to take care of the facility, because \u201cit provides improved safeguarding for children, athletes, coaches and staff members.”<\/p>\n
