Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Ministry of Basic Education, Arts and Culture has failed to replace heads of department for Khoekhoegowab teachers at schools in the Omaheke region for the past 10 years.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Omaheke Khoekhoegowab committee says they have been writing letters to both the ministry’s head office and regional directorate, but to no avail. According to the committee, about 10 schools in the Omaheke region have not had Khoekhoegowab heads of department (HOD) since the first post became vacant in 2008 and the latest in 2020.<\/p>\n

The Khoekhoegowab committee is a regional committee elected by the Khoekhoegowab community in the Omaheke region. The committee now feels the Khoekhoegowab language is being neglected.<\/p>\n

One of the committee members, Ismael Gariseb, said on Friday failure by the government to fill the positions has resulted in poor performance among pupils.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe then sent a letter to the Office of the Prime Minister in December 2020 where we asked for an investigation on why the Khoekhoegowab language HOD posts are advertised but are still not filled over the years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Gariseb said a Khoekhoegowab language HOD post had been advertised for over 14 years and disappeared, then reappeared in 2020 and still has not been filled at Otjivero Primary School at Omitara.<\/p>\n

\u201cA language HOD is the person that is there to ensure that the teachers employed to teach the language are qualified and meet the standard needed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the committee told The Namibian that it has also written to the Office of the Prime Minister requesting that suitable candidates be appointed in the respective posts.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Omaheke education regional director Pekka Semba could not comment on the issue. \u201cWith all due respect, I will not answer that. It is against my principles to answer that. I gave my responses from schools last year,\u201d he said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

He also added that he does not want to talk to the committee and the concerned people that approached The Namibian. \u201cI am not going to respond to that, you can write anything you want,\u201d Semba said. The ministry’s executive director, Sanet Steenkamp, referred all questions to the regional directorate.<\/p>\n
