Patriotism, which is defined as love and defence of one’s country – with all its inherent flaws and greatness – should inform the conduct of all Namibians,” the President said.

At the official celebrations held at the Vineta Stadium in Swakopmund, hundreds of people gathered at the gates early on Monday in the hopes of either entering to join in the celebrations or getting a glimpse of the President.

Due to Covid-19 regulations limiting gatherings to 1 000 people, only invited guests were allowed in, leaving many visibly disappointed, especially the children who outnumbered the adults.

“My plan didn’t work,” said a despondent 11-year-old TJ who left his home in the Mondesa neighbourhood at dawn and walked to the stadium. “I wanted to go in but the police told me only VIPs are allowed. I told them I am a VIP but they won’t believe me.”

Ten-year-old Junior was equally disappointed. “I just want to see my President,” he said. When asked why he quickly responded: “Because he is Superman.”

While some adults were frustrated for being refused entry since they felt they deserve a share of the money spent on the event, most wanted to “join the vibe inside” or “look at the President”. A mother of three said: “I have been a Swapo member for 20 years. All I want to do is show my children the President in person.”

Respecting the Covid-19 rules and protocols, those who turned up at the stadium received food parcels and could also observe proceedings of the celebrations from a distance. The Namibian Presidency apologized to those who would have liked to join from other regions and towns for the Independence Day celebrations in Swakopmund. The Presidency said it appreciates the show of support and thanked Namibians for their patriotism.

In true Namibian spirit, there was no unruly behaviour, only disappointment, caused by what the President in his speech called the truly unwelcome visitor, Covid-19, that profoundly affected Namibians’ lives.

“The way we interact as human beings has changed and this has taken its toll on all of us, mentally, physically and spiritually. Lives have been lost, businesses have collapsed, and many citizens have become unemployed. It has been an arduous two years for our nation and like the rest of the world, we have endured unimaginable pain and suffering,” the President said.

He praised Namibians for their resilience, having overcome unprecedented distress on many levels. “Many of you have gone beyond the call of duty; thus, you are all unsung heroes,” he said.

President Geingob said in the aftermath of the Global Economic Recession and the pandemic, it is imperative to develop specific policies that are strategic and aligned with future trends.

“There is no need for a new plan of action. Instead, there is an urgent need for efficient and effective execution across all sectors of our society to fast-track our national developmental objectives. We should focus on instituting cost-effective, pro-investment reforms with trade-offs that will enable Government and the Private Sector to address the country’s triple challenge of poverty, inequality, and unemployment,” he said.

“My dream has always been for a united Namibia where all her citizens peacefully coexist without tribalism or racism and I stand by this principle. We should never accept tribalism or racism in Namibia. A progressive society can never subscribe to the practice of retrogressive tendencies. A people united for prosperity cannot be divided by ethnicity,” the President said.

He said it is understandable that people want more because they have seen how far Namibia has come and rightfully believe that the nation can go further.

“Indeed, we can, and together, we will. However, what is not understandable is the unreasonable assertion by some that the days of racist, apartheid South West Africa were better than those of post-independent Namibia.

“Also, it’s incomprehensible and deplorable for some Namibians to claim that for the past 32 years, nothing has been achieved therefore Namibians have no reason to celebrate independence. Such mindsets are not only unpatriotic but insulting to those who made immense sacrifices in the quest for freedom,” the President said.

“National unity is the glue that binds any multicultural, multi-ethnic, and multiracial society. In Namibia, we pride ourselves on the fact that we are united in diversity. Furthermore, we pride ourselves on the fact that the nation and its wellbeing far outweigh our differences.” The President said over the years the government has developed processes, systems and institutions that have buttressed the Governance Architecture.

“We have improved and expanded access to primary education; we have expanded access to medical care, and we have expanded the supply of safe and clean drinking water to rural areas. The Government’s rural electrification program has brought electricity to thousands of Namibians. We have expanded our physical and communications infrastructure, including building new roads, modernising our harbours, and rolling out mobile telecommunications technology throughout the country,” he said.

Government has also been relentlessly pursuing new areas for investment that will catalyse economic growth and job creation. These include Green Hydrogen and Ammonia.

“We expect that this transformative project alone will employ 20 000 Namibians over a period of time and will be consequential to the future of our country,” President Geingob said.

“I re-emphasize that no one must be left out. Thus, together, we will march towards victory in the Second Phase of the struggle for Economic Liberation.”

The President said progress towards prosperity rests on a dynamic and robust economy. “Although Government has made every effort possible to support economic growth, I must emphasise that Government’s role is that of facilitation.

“The government’s priority is not to conduct business. Instead, our focus is on fulfilling the needs of vulnerable members of our society through implementing social relief programs and creating a conducive business environment.

He said as the engine of Namibia’s economy, the private sector must also play its role. “Only through the holding of hands and pulling in one direction, will we be able to achieve a society in which shared prosperity can exist,” the President said.

“I believe that securing the future of this country is not up to one president, one tribe, one race, or one gender; it is up to all of us as Namibians, hand in hand, to take our country forward. This country is bigger than each of us.”

The President said although there are many reasons for optimism, certain social ills need to be urgently rooted out as they could be catastrophic for the development, peace, stability and security the country prides itself on.

“I am talking of Gender-Based Violence, tribalism, corruption, violent crime, and general moral decay. There is no way that we can tolerate a culture of Gender-Based Violence in which the vulnerable are subjected to any form of abuse. We should also not tolerate a society where women and girls are stripped of their agency and reduced to objects. Therefore, I again appeal to all men; let us be protectors and builders. Let us not become terrorisers within our households and societies,” the President said, adding that respect is not earned out of fear.

He said the unabated trend of teenage pregnancies is also deeply concerning. “It is critical that we undergo an attitudinal adjustment to create a harmonious society in which both men and women can optimise their potential to better themselves, their families, society, and the nation. Therefore, we must continue the fight to uproot these harmful practices from the fabric of Namibian society,” the President said.

Regarding corruption, he said national ambitions are threatened by the scourge that if allowed to gain a foothold in society, places national security, sovereignty, and economic development under severe threat.

“Corruption is a global problem and requires a united approach if we aim to defeat it. Due to a robust Governance Architecture, we have ensured that corruption is not endemic in Namibia. However, there are isolated cases where individuals have engaged in high-level acts of corruption. Due to our robust processes, systems and institutions, and international co-operation, those implicated in corrupt practices are tried under due process of the law.”

The President said he also noted the growing incidents of criminality, which is evident in armed robberies, rapes, murders, assaults, housebreakings, drug, and human trafficking.

“There is no place for crime in this country. There is no place for criminals who have made it their business to constantly harass, rob, and murder peace-loving and hardworking people. Similarly, those who are drug-trafficking and are busy destroying our children at schools, clubs and other social gatherings must be identified, arrested, tried, and jailed within the ambit of our laws,” he said.

“The full wrath of Namibian law enforcement must fall on the criminal elements that are hell-bent on destroying the Namibian House. I am mindful that our police force is working hard to ensure that all Namibians are safe and secure in the land of the brave. But they must do more and employ new crime-fighting strategies so that we can prevent crime and eliminate unsolved cases.”

He added that the Judiciary must find ways and means to effectively and speedily deliver justice “because justice delayed means justice denied”. President Geingob said communities should play their part and not harbour criminals or buy stolen goods but should always report criminals residing in their midst and co-operate with the criminal justice system.

“I am confident that together, we are capable of making Namibia a safe and peaceful haven for all who live in it,” the President said.

He said over the years some may have doubted Namibians’ unity but the fight against Covid-19 has proven that when they stand together, they can surmount the most difficult challenges and reach the highest peaks.

“It is now our duty and responsibility to work hard and ensure that future generations of Namibians will be able to taste the fruits of our sacrifices. I believe we will prevail; I believe we will succeed, and I believe that as a people united for prosperity, together, we will take Namibia to greater heights,” President Geingob said.

“Happy Birthday, Namibia. May God bless the Republic of Namibia.
