He knows he is lying. When he said I am a failure he was not talking about my work,” Diescho said.

He said he was warned that Swapo was plotting against him, including by religious and political leaders. The plot was allegedly because he was growing in popularity.

“Nipam was becoming a benchmark in Africa. We were second to Ghana. Nipam was gaining prominence in Africa. Everyone knew that,” Diesco said, who is in self-imposed exile in Germany. He further denied there were any complaints from Nipam employees as alleged by Geingob, however, said there was one woman who was not happy at work.

“It started when I refused to tell a group of trainees that Namibia has a Swapo government. I was called to the State House by Frans Kapofi about it. It was also because I refused to give the Swapo manifesto as part of all the information packages given to trainees,” he said.

Diescho said he had no idea where Geingob’s animosity is coming from. “There was no separation agreement or money. I thought I had done something wrong, but I don’t know,” he said.

He maintains that he was innocent and was let go without any charges or a disciplinary hearing. SONA DRAMA Earlier in parliament, Geingob said Diescho was an outcast when he met him.

“Later on, I tried to bring him to the office and I made a submission to the Cabinet that I wanted Diescho to come.

“Some people who knew him from New York said: ‘Diescho, we suspect him’. I felt so bad I withdrew,” Geingob said, while explaining his history with the political analyst.

Responding to questions from Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani yesterday at the National Assembly, Geingob said he wanted to give Diescho a chance.

“I am the only one who stretched my hand out to him. He knows it. I get secret letters from him [and] messages. No really. When I saw Nipam had a vacancy, we had his [newspaper] articles but you never saw public service or training.

“I thought this is an opportunity for a scholar like him to come and prove his worth as a scholar, to train Namibians.

What happened? Did he tell you about what happened? Failure, that’s the word. Failure,” Geingob said. The president said the employees at Nipam can attest to Diescho’s behaviour.

“People at Nipam, go ask them. Women, go ask them. Failure [after] somebody who was given a job like that,” Geingob repeated. He went on to say that the problem started when Diescho was unhappy with the separation agreement money that was taxed.

“When the money was offered for separation, he didn’t see the tax that would be deducted, so he therefore accepted. Then he saw and therefore decided, no. Then the war started,” he said.

Geingob said through all the drama before Diescho left, he kept in touch with him. “I was the one who he was in touch with, SMSes ‘my big man’. It is unfair that he is there,” he stressed.

An irate Geingob added that the government has no plans to do harm to Diescho. “Who is prosecuting him? We don’t have time for that. He is apparently afraid to come back. He will be killed. By who? We don’t have time for that,” the president said. GENOCIDE

In his speech earler, Geingob says he is satisfied with the genocide negotiations that saw Namibia being offered N$18 billion as a development package by Germany, but maintained that the former coloniser must issue a public apology for the 1904-08 genocide.

The president said although the two governments have come to an agreement, Namibians have been divided on the quantum and are angry with the government over the deal. Geingob said the amount can be negotiated, and people should not politicise the issue.

“What is dividing us now is the costs. Now the cost was never accepted by us, we all have been rejecting it as an insult … and they kept on raising it and that is why we ended that. Now we can disagree there, I have done my part, all these six years I have been dealing with this issue,” Geingob said.

He went on to say that the government did not commit the genocide, hence it is unfair to be angry with the government. “ I listened to somebody at Swakopmund who said the government of Germany and concerned groups must sit and negotiate and the Namibian Government must sit and watch. Come on, why are we being treated like that?”Geingob stressed.

He further said he was not involved in the genocide, he was not even born then. Rally for Democracy and Progress president Mike Kavekotora said the community heard on the Otjiherero radio that the government has a nonchalant attitude regarding the genocide issue and continues with business as usual while there’s no communication on the way forward.

Venaani said the aid that the European Union is giving Ukraine for the “one month” war against Russia as well as Namibia’s grant to the war veterans is in stark contrast to the genocide agreement where thousands of Namibians were murdered. He then asked Geingob to join their fight to ensure the affected communities get what they deserve.

PROMISES The president also said the government has increased the grant for children with disabilities from the current N$250 to N$1 300 per month, effective during the 2023 financial year.

Geingob also said that some relief will be provided to students who are finding it difficult to pay back their loans to the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF). In this regard, an amnesty will be made available for the NSFAF debt repayments for a period of 12 months.

“The line ministry and Ministry of Finance are directed to work out modalities to waive interest on the loans of all NSFAF beneficiaries,” the president added.

Moreover, a multi-stakeholder committee was established in March to design the modalities for a national internship and apprenticeship programme, to be rolled out in 2023.

The government will in July host the ‘African Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit’, a platform to bring young people involved in tourism enterprises together to become active participants in the sector.

Acting NSFAF chief executive officer Kennedy Kandume explained that the amnesty is on interest repayment and not the loans. “Debtors or NSFAF past beneficiaries are expected to repay their loans, however, without interest for the next 12 months,” he said.

University of Namibia political science lecturer Rui Tyitende said the overriding impression created by the Sona is that the material conditions of the 1,6 million people living in poverty, and the more than 900 000 Namibians living in shacks will continue to reside outside the parameters of the ‘Namibian House’. He further said it is disappointing that the Sona made no reference to the daily sexual violence and murder experienced by women across the country.

“What is the immediate action plan of the government to arrest this social evil? ‘The peace and security we enjoy’ is not only the absence of direct and open political violence, but the ability of citizens to go about their lives without the fear of being raped, and bludgeoned to death by criminals,” he explained. He added that Namibia is in a state of economic decline and the development initiatives outlined are future-oriented and not immediate.

“On the social front, the grant increase of children with disabilities and the consolidation of the Food Bank into a modified, conditional basic income grant, in the form of cash transfers to the tune of N$500, even though not sufficient, will make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our society,” Tyitende added.

For More News And Analysis About Namibia Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Namibia.
