Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>SALOME Kambala, a member of the National Governance Council under the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), says this mechanism would be used to tackle youth unemployment.<\/b><\/p>\n

Kambala says the APRM aims to foster good governance, high economic growth and enable the sharing of experiences and best practices by identifying and assessing the needs of capacity building.<\/p>\n

She was speaking at the House of Democracy in Windhoek yesterday.<\/p>\n

\u201cNamibia became part of the APRM in 2017. It’s a self-monitoring and peer learning instrument,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kambala said through the APRM the council can monitor and learn from other countries how to solve various challenges they are faced with.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Namibia we have the issue of youth unemployment. Through the APRM we can approach other countries, such as Mozambique, and ask how they go about it, and if they could share their best practices with us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kambala said the council has conducted a target review throughout the whole country and engaged with stakeholders on youth unemployment, using the APRM.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to know where the issue lies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kambala said they have a self-assessment report helping countries to review themselves honestly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the self-assessment report is concluded it is then shared with the United Nations and other African countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith self-assessment you report the way things are. If Namibia has a high rate of unemployment, you say it as it is,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Niita Hiishono, another National Governance Council member, said: \u201cWe have received different recommendations on areas we are tackling, such as on democratic and political governance, economic governance and management, socio-economic governance, and corporate governance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Hishono said they would engage civil society, the private sector and the media, as well as young people on all issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cNamibians should take up opportunities and engage on issues that can change and uplift the country for good governance, and learn more on our website,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
