Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE deputy minister of mines and energy Cornelia Shilunga commissioned the electrification of Marulaboom, Rooidaghek, Mkata and Mangetti Dune rural areas in Tsumkwe on Wednesday.<\/b><\/p>\n

The areas were electrified and linked to the national electricity grid at a cost of N$40 million under the ministry’s rural electrification project in conjunction with Cenored.<\/p>\n

Shilunga said the project was undertaken to accelerate development in the areas, and link them to the national electricity grid.<\/p>\n

\u201cElectricity is a basic human need. It is essential for the economic growth of communities, particularly at a time when the nation wants to industrialise. It also remains a social growth driver for the communities,\u201d said Shilunga.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the same occasion, Otjozondjupa governor James Uerikua called on the mines and energy ministry to also expand the power line to Tsumkwe and Gam settlements.<\/p>\n

Uerikua said Tsumkwe and Gam are currently using a mini-grid system, which does not have sufficient capacity to cater to the demands of the two settlements.<\/p>\n

He said electricity is an enabler and attracts investors, and eventually development.<\/p>\n

The governor thanked Cenored for ensuring that the Otjozondjupa region is electrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe inhabitants are feeling the presence of Cenored not only in Tsumkwe but also in other constituencies such as Okakarara, Otjiwarongo, Otavi and Grootfontein,\u201d said Uerikua.<\/p>\n
