Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>A GROUP of 33 Capricorn employees recently volunteered at the Side by Side Early Intervention Centre, which is a non-profit organisation that supports children with disabilities in Namibia.<\/p>\n

The Capricorn Group volunteers, called Changemakers, spent quality time with the children, carried out fun development activities and painted the centre\u2019s chalkboards and tyre planting beds.<\/p>\n

The volunteers also created an outdoor sensory path that will be used to assist children with sensory integration issues to improve cognitive abilities.<\/p>\n

The centre, which is based in Goreangab, was established to compensate for the national lack of focus on Early Intervention Pre-Primary education for children with disabilities. However, due to a lack of financial support, meeting the needs of children with disabilities can be challenging.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll children with special needs see themselves as superheroes and believe that there is nothing that they can\u2019t achieve. Those of us who don\u2019t have disabilities have the responsibility to keep encouraging them to be the superheroes they see themselves as and to learn, from them, to not give up on our own dreams,\u201d Huipie van Wyk, Director of the Side by Side Early Intervention Centre, said.<\/p>\n

The centre offers early development opportunities to children with special needs through the provision of day-care services, early intervention sessions, neuro-natal services, workshops and home visitations in Okuryangava, Khomasdal and Goreangab. The centre also prepares children for school and trains parents, communities and caregivers to support their children at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll children need love, support and care; and for kids with special needs, a positive environment can help ensure that they maintain a strong sense of self-worth and build confidence. Our experience here was eye-opening, especially how the very committed and passionate staff at the Centre view what many would classify as disabilities as superpowers. It\u2019s beautiful to see how each child, individually, is encouraged to develop at their own pace and become the best version of themselves that they can.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Capricorn Group Changemaker outreach programme provides our employees with platforms like these visits, to volunteer their time and to show what it means to be Connectors of Positive Change,\u201d Marlize Horn, the Group\u2019s Executive of Brand and Corporate Affairs, said.<\/p>\n
