Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>KHORIXAS youth last week received free career guidance through a workshop initiated by a local resident, Israel Gawiseb.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the beginning of a series of programmes to help young people tackle unemployment,\u201d said Gawiseb, adding that the workshop provided training on job hunting, job creation, CV writing, cover letter writing and interview preparation.<\/p>\n

The first career guidance workshop, which was held at the town hall last Wednesday, was attended by 11 youth. The workshop was the first of many planned for Kunene region.<\/p>\n

\u201cDepending on the need and sponsorship, more workshops are planned for rural areas with limited access to such training,\u201d Gawiseb told The Namibian on Monday.<\/p>\n

According to Gawiseb, the youth are plagued by complacency and lack of access to information and skills workshops.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a very few events of this nature and a low turn out when they do occur,\u201d Gawiseb added.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old is a biomedical scientist with five years’ experience working for an international student organisation. His work has seen him working and volunteering on four continents where he taught English, for example, in Brazil and in Kenya where he hosted similar workshops.<\/p>\n

Gawiseb is a founder of Dynamus Institute, whose concept aims at equipping the youth and pupils with job-hunting skills and supplementing the school curriculum. Dynamus Institute also provides academic support services in reading and numeracy.<\/p>\n

Gawiseb’s goal is to establish a network of trainers throughout Namibia.<\/p>\n

“My message is for people to engage more. Opportunities rarely, if ever, come knocking when you’re lying at home. I also encourage youth to hone their skills through civic duty and volunteerism,” he said.<\/p>\n

Gawiseb plans to offer similar workshops throughout Namibia provided he is offered transport and accommodation.<\/p>\n

Khorixas councillor Norman Maurice Nanuseb, who also attended the workshop, told The Namibian that although the workshop was informative and educative, the participants’ turn up was low.<\/p>\n

Nanuseb urged young people to turn up in numbers for such workshops, as they prepare them for the job market.<\/p>\n
