Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Namibia Revenue Agency (Namra) commissioner Sam Shivute said he and his team face threats, after the agency destroyed N$5 million worth of products imported by individuals.<\/b><\/p>\n

Namra, a tax collecting agency under the finance ministry, burnt the items this week and faced criticism from members of the public for their decision to destroy the counterfeit goods.<\/p>\n

Shivute, in a social media post on Thursday, said he and his team face having their names written in a traditional bowl known as ‘etiti’.<\/p>\n

He was making reference to an incident earlier this year which saw the names of seven Ministry of Works and Transport employees allegedly written in a traditional bowl as part of an alleged witchcraft ritual.<\/p>\n

Shivute’s reaction came after supporters of the Namibian Economic Freedom Fighters, led by the party’s commissar for economic development Michael Amushelelo, this week closed down businesses at China Town in Windhoek.<\/p>\n

This was done in retaliation to Namra’s decision to destroy the imported items.<\/p>\n

Despite this, Shivute asserted that Namra will continue to administer tax and customs laws in Namibia “relentlessly and passionately”.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo weapons formed against us will prosper. No amount of threats or intimidation will stop us from fulfilling our legal mandate,\u201d Shivute said in his post.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are divinely protected, working in a divine order. No individual is bigger than a system. We are a system working collectively and in unison,\u201d Shivute said.<\/p>\n

He added that all customs and taxation officials are under direct orders to step up their enforcement efforts strictly in accordance with the tax and customs’ laws of Namibia.<\/p>\n

He said this must be done without fear or favour, and reiterated Namra’s commitment to serve Namibia with passion.<\/p>\n
