Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>NAMIBIA will host Africa’s second-largest millimetre telescope.<\/b><\/p>\n

The project will be spearheaded by the University of Namibia (Unam) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project from Radboud University.<\/p>\n

The two partners, who are currently consulting, says the telescope will be launched in due course.<\/p>\n

Radbound University managing director Marc Klein Wolt says the telescope will be part of the biggest in the world.<\/p>\n

He says the project will greatly contribute to the economic and scientific development of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we are going to put here on the Gamsberg Mountain is a world-class facility. This will give Namibia the chance to also use the telescope, and it will give the country the chance to grow the skills needed for it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Senior lecturer at Unam, Micheal Backer, says Namibia is well placed to host the telescope.<\/p>\n

\u201cNamibia is certainly the best place on earth to do astronomy for several reasons. The benefits certainly are multiplied.<\/p>\n

“It started with a world-class research project of exchange between staff and between students,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
