Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Namibia on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding with MobiPay Namibia to jointly implement digital solutions for rural transformation, human capital development and sustainable food systems.<\/b><\/p>\n

The agreement was signed by WFP country director George Fedha and MobiPay chief executive officer Claus Deckenbrock.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from the UN agency, the WFP, which is the food assistance branch of the United Nations, realised that most smallholder farmers in Namibia suffer a considerable amount of crop waste due to varying factors, including the lack of adequate storage facilities, inaccessibility to the market and other external factors brought about by extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n

This inevitably hinders progress on ensuring that the country attains food security.<\/p>\n

Considering that sustainable farming methods and technologies are significant catalysts needed to achieving improved agricultural yields, the agreement between WFP and MobiPay will establish a framework for collaboration and strengthen e-commerce solutions for smallholder farmers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an effort to accelerate the journey towards zero-hunger, food and nutrition security and capacity building, partnerships with the private sector are crucial for skills strengthening through access to expertise and innovation that facilitate an end-to-end productive benefit for small-scale farmers,\u201d said Fedha.<\/p>\n

MobiPay is a service provider in Namibia and other African countries for mobile wallets, card issuing and acquiring and cardless transactions.<\/p>\n

Deckenbrock said partnering with a world-renowned organisation like WFP to develop cutting-edge technologies can accelerate digital solutions for development and advance food security in Namibia.<\/p>\n

He said the partnership would yield immeasurable results for Namibia and the world.<\/p>\n
