Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>CRICKET Namibia reached new heights on Monday when they were announced as the winners of three International Cricket Council awards.<\/b><\/p>\n

At a press conference at the Grove Mall, attended by players, coaches, board members, sponsors and young developing cricketers, it was announced that Namibia had won two global and one continental ICC award, namely the ICC Development Initiative of the Year, the ICC Associate Members’ Men’s Performance of the year, and the Africa Women’s Performance of the Year awards.<\/p>\n

The ICC Development Initiative of the Year award was in recognition for Cricket Namibia’s Ashburton Kwata Mini-Cricket Programme for increasing participation by more than 70 percent to about 67 000 children, despite the impact of Covid-19, as CN president Dr Rudi van Vuuren explained in a press statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Covid-19 pandemic resulted in associated lockdown restrictions for individuals across Namibia, including the closure of schools, which demanded a creative solution to keep the cricket programme running. So we took cricket into parking lots, onto quiet streets, beaches, netball courts and unoccupied, open pieces of land.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe managed to access a grand total of more than 67 000 children in one-off engagements, while more than 17 000 children played regular matches. This initiative has a core focus of connecting communities and improving lives by inspiring the Namibian primary school child,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The national men’s side, the Richelieu Eagles also won the award for the ICC Associate Members’ Men’s Performance of the Year, for their eight-wicket victory against Ireland at last year’s T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n

That victory enabled Namibia to reach the Super 12 stage of the competition, and by so doing, they automatically qualified for this year’s T20 World Cup which will be held in Australia in October.<\/p>\n

Cricket Namibia CEO Johan Muller praised the work of coach Pierre de Bruyn, as well as the board members and volunteers of Cricket Namibia for their hard work behind the scenes.<\/p>\n

\u201cPierre de Bruyn has been instrumental in making sure the team is well prepared for whatever comes their way and the change of mindset, and how they view themselves as players. I think that is one of the biggest changes that has occurred in our cricket, namely that these players now actually believe they can win,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnfield success originates in the boardroom and I must compliment our board members. The board that took over in 2018 under the leadership of Dr Rudi van Vuuren and quite a number of influential business people who just said that they want to steer cricket in the right direction. They are all volunteers but they have a passion for cricket,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The national women’s team, the Capricorn Eagles also won the Africa Women’s Performance of the Year for their eight-wicket victory against Tanzania in a World T20 Africa qualifier in Gaborone last year.<\/p>\n

The odds were stacked against Namibia, with Tanzania ranked seven places higher than Namibia at 16th in the world, but the Eagles gave a great performance to reach the winning target with a ball to spare.<\/p>\n

The vice president of Cricket Namibia, Polly Negongo said it was a special day.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve been involved with cricket for just over 25 years now and to have gone from where we were to where we are now and being involved in it as well is a massive privilege – I’d like to congratulate everyone on all the awards we have won.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had a special word of thanks for the Capricorn Eagles coach Francois van der Merwe.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s amazing the brand of cricket that they play and Francois, your leadership has been exceptional, and you have turned these girls into cricketers in a very short space of time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also praised the men’s national team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was lucky enough to accompany them to the World Cup last year, and they are just an amazing bunch of guys – people who understand the assignment, and guys who wake up every day knowing what they need to do to get the job done.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think we as Cricket Namibia wake up every day looking to win these awards, but we wake up every day aiming to do the right thing. Doing the right thing is to take cricket to the people, what we’ve done here, and showing that youngsters can look at cricket in Namibia as a career option,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Negongo praised all the role players for their hard work and dedication but warned that they needed to keep on working hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to keep on working, because our dream becomes bigger every day, our target is moving, so we need to keep following through,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
