Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE municipality of Walvis Bay has in principle approved 20 000 hectares of land for the construction of a green hydrogen pilot plant at the town, the town council announced at its ordinary monthly meeting last week.<\/b><\/p>\n

The land is Portion 8 of the remainder of Farm 58, which is the new industrial area between Walvis Bay’s airport and Dune 7.<\/p>\n

The plant will be constructed by Cleanergy Namibian, a joint venture between the O&L Group and its Belgian partner, CMB.TECH.<\/p>\n

Cleanergy Namibian is expected to develop a green hydrogen fuel station and a \u20ac2,5 billion ammonia production plant at the coast.<\/p>\n

The initiative is in response to the Harambee Prosperity Plan II, which aims to investigate the possibility of a green hydrogen strategy.<\/p>\n

Walvis Bay council chairperson Richard Hoaeb explained the terms of the sale.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat the applicant at own risk and at own cost conduct an environmental impact assessment and environmental management plan, risk management plan, and any other statutory assessment, studies and processes, as well as obtain clearance from the environmental commissioner,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The project owners are expected to subdivide the land at their own cost.<\/p>\n

Last month, a Namibian delegation visited the annual World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Switzerland, where they attempted to sell the country’s potential to produce green hydrogen.<\/p>\n

Europe is looking to import 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually to replace fossil fuels in several industries and vehicles.<\/p>\n

Germany pledged \u20ac40 million (N$671 million) to help Namibia develop green hydrogen.<\/p>\n
