Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>MINISTER of defence and veterans affairs Frans Kapofi says he is not aware of the arrest of two South African tourists who allegedly took pictures of the Grootfontein military base.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Otjozondjupa police spokesperson inspector Maureen Mbeha, the tourists were arrested at Grootfontein last Thursday for allegedly taking pictures of military equipment at the base.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was only informed today about what happened, so I can’t tell you what happened there,\u201d Kapofi yesterday said.<\/p>\n

Ministry spokesperson major Petrus Shilumbu promised to provide information on the matter yesterday, but did not do so at the time of going to print.<\/p>\n

Mbeha, however, said it was not yet known how the tourists entered the military base, adding they were only seen once they were already inside the base.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is confirmed that the two are tourists in Namibia, who arrived in the country in April and were expected to leave the country around July this year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She said the suspects, Walter (60) and Cornelia Dalton (58), made their first court appearance on Friday and were granted bail of N$5 000 each.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe case was postponed to Tuesday, and it has now been postponed to 6 July,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Mbeha said the tourists have been charged with trespassing under the Defence Act, which prohibits them from entering military bases.<\/p>\n
