{"id":23062,"date":"2022-06-23T13:59:15","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T13:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/cosafa-cup-mauritius-profile"},"modified":"2022-06-23T14:10:30","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T14:10:30","slug":"cosafa-cup-mauritius-profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/cosafa-cup-mauritius-profile","title":{"rendered":"Cosafa Cup &#8211; Mauritius profile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span><b>MAURITIUS caused arguably the biggest upset in Cosafa Cup history in 2004 when they beat South Africa, who had a full-strength team headed to the African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia, in the first round in Curepipe.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>But Club M are still seeking to get past the quarter-final stage of the southern African championship.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, they were quarter-finalists after beating Namibia and but then lost 1-0 to Angola in Luanda.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 their hopes were dashed in the last eight when they went down 3-1 to Zambia. In 2008 they suffered the indignity of a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of fellow islanders, Seychelles, the biggest defeat in the history of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The side exited the 2013 finals in the group phase despite a thumping 4-0 win over Seychelles in their final match.<\/p>\n<p>Mauritius entered the 2015 Cosafa Cup with high hopes, but were bundled out in the first round despite again defeating Seychelles.<\/p>\n<p>And they exited in the first round again in 2016 when they managed to win just one of their three first round games against a young Angola.<\/p>\n<p>The side went out in the pool stages in 2017, 2018 and 2019, though mixed in there was a 1-0 victory over Malawi in Polokwane. That was a seventh win in 34 games at the tournament down the years.<\/p>\n<p>Club M won the gold medal at the 2003 Indian Ocean Island Games, beating Reunion in the final at their newly refurbished stadium at Curepipe.
