Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>BRAVE Warriors’ first-choice goalkeeper at Cosafa Cup 2022, Eduard Maova, is backing the youngsters in the team to put their best foot forward when they face Mozambique in a semi-final clash today. The match kicks off at 16h00.<\/b><\/p>\n

A good showing will be rewarded with a call-up to the regular senior national side for bigger assignments like the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Cameroon and Burundi, says Maova (27), who has been impressed with the young recruits.<\/p>\n

However, going for individual glory will not cut it, as the youngsters have to impress within the scope of playing as a unit, and follow new head coach Collin Benjamin’s instructions to the letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a young squad mixed with some experienced players. And this is an opportunity for us \u2013 especially the young ones, to show the coach and put their hand up and say ‘you can include me in the squad for Cameroon’,\u201d Benjamin said ahead of the semi-final in Durban, South Africa.<\/p>\n

Namibia, while erratic, did enough to overcome Madagascar 2-0 in their quarter-final on Tuesday. The result was welcome, but the display left a lot to be desired, he said afterwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’ve got a new team, we’ve got young players, and this is the platform where we want to test them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mozambique played to a 0-0 stalemate with a young South Africa side on Wednesday, but triumphed after post-match penalties to dump the defending champions out of the cup competition and into the plate section.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot change what has to come. We’re gonna take whoever it is. You can definitely see in three weeks we tried. It’s not easy. But it’s about the process, it’s a long-term one, and we hope and believe only by hard work we can get to our target,\u201d the coach said.<\/p>\n

A narrow 1-0 loss to Mozambique’s Mambas in the group concluding game put paid to the Warriors’ ambition during the previous edition.<\/p>\n

Vengeance is not the obvious objective, as Benjamin and Maova both emphasised integrating the newcomers into the senior set-up remains the priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s good experience and exposure to the young ones. And for us [regular seniors], we’re guiding them well, and so far going through the preparations, we’re ready to face Mozambique,\u201d said Maova.<\/p>\n

The second semi-final will see West African guest nation Senegal clash with five-time winners Zambia at 19h00.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Wednesday, Senegal edged Eswatini 10-9 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw inside 90 minutes to secure a second successive appearance in the title decider.<\/p>\n

They featured in the competition for the first time last year when a youthful squad of home-based players reached the final, only to lose on penalties to hosts South Africa.<\/p>\n

The Plate semi-finals on Friday will be played at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium as Madagascar take on South Africa (12h00) and Botswana meet Eswatini (15h00).<\/p>\n
