Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Namibian Police chief Sebastian Ndeitunga has lashed out at police officers involved in criminal activities, saying it is shameful and embarrassing to the force.<\/p>\n

Ndeitunga was reacting to a series of offences committed over the weekend involving police officers. One police officer allegedly stole cigarettes confiscated as illegal trades, and another allegedly shot and killed his colleague.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very disturbing to learn that police officers are the ones involved in criminal activities, while they are supposed to prevent such acts. They should remember that they are the servants of the public, and expected to behave as such,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

Ndeitunga further stated that it is unacceptable to receive reports of police officers taking part in criminal activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice should be professional, leading a good example in society because they are there to protect people,\u201d Ndeitunga said.<\/p>\n

He said although the two are still suspects, until proven guilty, it is the court to decide, and if so they will be dealt with accordingly, and justice shall be served.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not leave a stone unturned, they will be good examples to others, that such activities shall not be done by police officers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He applauded fellow police officers who arrested them, for proudly honouring their jobs for the sake of maintaining law and order.<\/p>\n

A police officer from the Oshakati police station was arrested on Friday after he allegedly stole 12 boxes of Yes cigarettes confiscated from Angolan nationals who were selling them illegally on the street.<\/p>\n

According to a weekend police crime report, the suspect and his colleague organised an undercover operation and confiscated 14 boxes of illicit Yes cigarettes worth N$2 800.<\/p>\n

It is alleged that the suspects only handed over two boxes at the Oshakati police station, while 12 boxes were not recovered.<\/p>\n

Investigations into the matter continue.<\/p>\n
