Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>MINES and energy minister Tom Alweendo has warned that the discovery of oil in other countries has sparked greed and social unrest, hence the need to strengthen Namibia’s institutions to effectively manage the resource.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are countries that discovered oil, but it led to destruction instead of a positive impact. Some people become greedy and use the revenue for their own pockets rather than sharing,\u201d Alweendo said.<\/p>\n

He said this creates social unrest.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is also a huge revenue that comes to the state, and people start having high expectations and plan to do so many things, that you overestimate what you can do with the revenue. Everybody also starts to focus more on the oil sector and abandons the other sectors. When oil is depleted, there is no economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Alweendo stressed the need to strengthen the country’s institutions to ensure they are effective enough to manage the resource in the best interests of the economy and future generations.<\/p>\n

He also urged Namibians to do their best to partake in the recovery of the economy.<\/p>\n

He was speaking at an information sharing meeting at Walvis Bay on Friday.<\/p>\n

Alweendo said solutions could be found if all Namibians discussed the ways they could invest in the Namibian economy.<\/p>\n

He touched on the issue of green hydrogen, saying that the world was moving towards reaching net-zero emissions and limiting global warming to 1,5 degrees Celsius, by switching from fossil fuels to renewables, including wind and solar power, to generate electricity and fuel.<\/p>\n

Namibia has already received renewable energy proposals from international companies and is negotiating their execution and benefits to the country, he said.<\/p>\n

He appealed to the business community to be ready for service delivery.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuddenly there is a demand for this commodity, especially green hydrogen for transportation fuel. There is a market for this commodity. We are at a location where the best wind and solar radiation is three times more than other countries. We are in the position to provide this desired commodity to the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must use our natural resources to make sure that we position ourselves as a continental hub to produce it. We have already signed agreements with countries like Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands that want to fast-track the net zero journey,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Alweendo touched on the issue of rising oil prices, which has led to skyrocketing fuel prices and left consumers and importing companies feeling frustrated.<\/p>\n

He said the government understands people’s frustrations, and a review of fuel prices is conducted every month.<\/p>\n

However, he noted that the countries selling fuel were constantly raising their prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government has to add certain levies on top of the landing price of the oil that is bought by importing companies towards tax, the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, the Road Fund Administration and the National Energy Fund among others, which comes to the final price.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alweendo said with the recent discovery of oil, a lot still needs to be done between the discovery and production [stages], in order to start selling, and that process could take years.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving discovered oil today does not mean we are going to start selling oil immediately. It can take about nine years. A lot needs to be done between the discoveries and production in order to start selling. Further analysis must be made, especially as the oil was discovered in deep waters. The time period between discovery and production, however, gives us time to acquire skills and look at regulations and legal frameworks.\u201d<\/p>\n
