Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>NAMIBIA, being a youthful nation with mainly women-headed households, needs an agenda which cannot exclude women and young people.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was said by Seimy Shidute, the deputy executive director of administration, planning and tourism in the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, when she welcomed delegates to the Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit and Challenge, which started in Windhoek yesterday.<\/p>\n

At least 44 African nations are taking part in the summit, which is expected to be officially opened by tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta today, with a possible appearance from president Hage Geingob.<\/p>\n

Shidute said the government prioritises the advancement of women and youth in the tourism sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe envision the creation of a sector that will be inclusive and sustainable, creating a channel for new entrants, particularly the youth, to implement innovative businesses that would make tourism thrive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The ministry recently launched the 2021 tourism statistics report, which showed the country was moving from bad to better, \u201cbut we are a long way from being out of the woods\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

The unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic is reverberating around the world with potentially far-reaching socio-economic implications, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Namibia we have seen the devastating effects \u2013 not only on the collapse of businesses, but also on the lives of ordinary people through poverty, inequality and unemployment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shidute said with the global tourism industry currently in recovery mode, it is a case of survival of the fittest.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is becoming increasingly difficult as the economic crises have become vicious, coming one after another, and inflation continues to rise in our biggest consumer markets, the European Union and the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch challenges can be daunting, and the youth can help Africa move forward and seek a new trajectory,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Shidute expressed her appreciation for the young people who invested time and energy in attending the summit to discuss critical issues facing the tourism sector, which provides cause to be optimistic about the future.<\/p>\n

She said Namibia values the opportunity to host the summit, in which the key focus areas are youth entrepreneurship, students’ immersion in innovation, small-enterprise development, personal transformation, and self-actualisation.<\/p>\n

Delegates will connect with African and global tourism leaders, entrepreneurial innovators, and partner organisations from across Africa and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a platform created for you to learn about markets for start-ups, to establish partnerships, and to build new ventures. You will be equipped with new skills in the tourism industry. The opportunities gained will be limitless,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hando Sinisalu, the founder of the Estonian digital marketing company Marketing Parrot presented on digital marketing in tourism, while Lizanne du Plessis, the founder of Eco Africa Digital of South Africa, gave a presentation on digital and social media marketing for entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
