Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>RECONNAISSANCE Energy Namibia has successfully won against an urgent application which sought to halt its oil drilling activities in the Kavango region.<\/p>\n

Recon Namibia was named as a respondent in an application filed by conservancies, namely Ncumcara community forest management, Muduva Nyangana communal conservancy, Katope community forest management, Kavango East and West regional conservancy and community forest association.<\/p>\n

The conservancies sought to challenge the amendments to the Company\u2019s Environmental Compliance Certificate that were approved by the Environmental Commissioner of the Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism.<\/p>\n

The conservancies were represented by the Legal Assistance Centre\u2019s lawyer, Corinna Van Wyk, while the State was represented by Sisa Namanje.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong others, the applicants sought an order for an interim interdict restraining the company from putting into effect the decision of the Environmental Commissioner\u2019s ECC Amendments or continuing any oil and gas exploration activities which have been authorized by the ECC Amendments. The preliminary procedural points raised by the respondents \u2013 including Recon Namibia, the seventh respondent \u2013have been upheld by the Court, meaning Recon Namibia and the other respondents have successfully defended the application for an interdict,\u201d Mwanyengwa Ndapewashali Shapwanale, the director of communications at Recon said.<\/p>\n

She said that the court has ordered that the matter is dismissed and removed it from the court roll, adding that applicants pay the cost for all respondents, including Recon Namibia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to apply business best practices in all parts of our project,\u201d Shapwanale concluded.<\/p>\n
