Nonetheless, I strongly believe the senior command conference 2022 had indeed come at the right time when we needed to revisit our strategies of combating crime,” Ndeitunga says.

He said this at the official opening of the police’s Senior Command Conference at Rundu last week.

Police holding cells have become congested due to many individuals remanded in custody, as well as detained illegal immigrants countrywide, he said.

The police chief said this is due to suspects being remanded in custody after court appearances, coupled with a high number of illegal immigrants being detained at police holding cells countrywide.

Ndeitunga said the congestion has become a burden to the police in carrying out their mandate of combating crime.

To mitigate this, he said the conference has resolved to engage stakeholders such as the Namibian Correctional Service and the Immigration Control Department.

The prevalence of crime in the country also remains of serious concern with close to a 100 000 criminal cases recorded last year, Ndeitunga said.

He said the five days of discussions at the conference would focus on issues preventing the police from combating crime, and would adopt resolutions to enable the police to unlock the gravitational centres of crime.

“We therefore need to pass resolutions which are smart, realistic, measurable, achievable, implementable and time-bound,” he said..

Ndeitunga said the amnesty to surrender firearms, ammunition, and related materials and is about to be launched.

The minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Albert Kawana, at the same event said: “The prevalence of crime in the country concerns all of us.

“I am, however, aware that fighting crime cannot be the responsibility of police alone.”

The minister said fighting crime requires intervention from all stakeholders, particularly the institutions charged with addressing socio-economic issues, which are often what drives criminals to commit crimes.

He said crime thrives in an environment of poverty, hunger, unemployment, and a lack of economic empowerment.

The five-day conference ended this past Friday.

For More News And Analysis About Namibia Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Namibia.
