REGISTERED transport operators at Rehoboth are unhappy with illegal transporters at the town, the withdrawal of fines and lack of a taxi rank for local and long-distance taxi operators.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can no longer tolerate the lawless behaviour of these illegal public transporters in the form of seven seaters,\u201d said Corrie Kisting, spokesperson of the Concerned Group of Public Transport Operators, on Tuesday during the petition handover to the municipality.<\/p>\n

Delston Lucas, a registered taxi operator for 15 years, said it is unfair that unregistered taxis operate without transport permits.<\/p>\n

He added that their buses do not get any passengers while seven-seaters operating between Windhoek and Rehoboth make seven to eight trips a day.<\/p>\n

Emma du Plessis, a bus owner, said: \u201cThese illegal taxis are killing us. The seven-seater asks N$70 while we ask N$60.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group also plans to hand over a petition to the City of Windhoek soon.<\/p>\n

Rehoboth mayor Enrico Junius, who received the petition, said the council held a meeting where it resolved to develop a taxi rank.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was identified and we will start with it immediately,\u201d stated Junius.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know there is a problem with the seven-seaters and individuals offering taxi services they are not permitted to. If you have permits to act, then I support you fully,\u201d added Junius.<\/p>\n

Warrant officer Ismael Endjambi of the police traffic division said: \u201cI’m aware of the situation. There is always a complaint in the traffic department about us when it comes to seven-seaters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the seven seaters were charged N$16 000-N$20 000 in fines. The matter was addressed in court,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He said they would have a meeting with the court to discuss the matter.<\/p>\n
