{"id":27677,"date":"2022-08-15T16:34:54","date_gmt":"2022-08-15T16:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/ministry-promotes-charcoal-industry"},"modified":"2022-08-15T16:42:39","modified_gmt":"2022-08-15T16:42:39","slug":"ministry-promotes-charcoal-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/ministry-promotes-charcoal-industry","title":{"rendered":"Ministry promotes charcoal industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development has embarked on a campaign to promote the production and sale of charcoal, as part of implementing its Growth at Home Strategy.<\/p>\n<p>THE Ministry of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development has embarked on a campaign to promote the production and sale of charcoal, as part of implementing its Growth at Home Strategy.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement issued by the ministry&#8217;s chief information officer, Elijah Mukubonda, the ministry aims at accelerating economic growth, reducing income inequality and increasing employment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhase one of the ministry&#8217;s strategy is focused on laying a solid foundation in sectors where Namibia already has a comparative advantage \u2013 like in agro-processing (wood charcoal), fish processing, steel manufacturing, automotive industry, chemical, metal fabrication, taxidermy, Swakara pelt production, cosmetics, jewelry and coloured gemstone industries,\u201d said the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry is, however, focusing on the promotion of charcoal to create awareness of the industry to promote the charcoal sector growth that would contribute to the inclusive and sustainable industrial development of Namibia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know this can be achieved through harvesting raw products to be transformed into semi-processed products and charcoal is one of the intended product(s) for the plan,\u201d said the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Namibia&#8217;s charcoal industry can be considered a basic industry suitable for technological upgrading to facilitate its transition into an internationally competitive manufacturing industry, said the ministry, adding that charcoal production and further processing is one of the promising agro-processing industries to enhance in-depth value addition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creation of charcoal production factories is a growth opportunity in strategic areas such as Omaheke, Otjozondjupa and Oshikoto regions where the invader bush is predominant and thus yields high volumes of charcoal,\u201d said Mukubonda.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry says charcoal producers have increased from 350 in 2014 to 1 082 at the end of 2020, with 118 000 tonnes of charcoal exported from Namibia annually to South Africa, Japan and Pakistan, and there have been efforts to access the Turkish market.<\/p>\n<p>Namibian charcoal has also broken into the United States market together with beef and beer.<\/p>\n<p>Given its huge potential to contribute to the overall objectives and targets of the Growth at Home Strategy, the promotion of the charcoal industry and its value chain into Namibia&#8217;s agro-processing sector growth strategy is of great importance, said the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The Growth at Home Strategy is been rolled out in four phases of five years each, stretching to 2030 and beyond. The second phase covers the 2021 to 2025 period and seeks to place Namibia as a regional player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis shift of the strategy has begun yielding notable and positive results &#8211; Namibia as a regional player is exporting charcoal briquettes and raw fines to notable markets.
