A TOTAL of N$222 million has thus far been generated by the Conservancy Relief, Recovery and Resilient Facility to provide financial relief to community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) entities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

A TOTAL of N$222 million has thus far been generated by the Conservancy Relief, Recovery and Resilient Facility to provide financial relief to community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) entities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

This was announced by Hilde Ileka, the chief warden at the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism responsible for CBNRM issues, at a panel discussion at the just-ended African Protected and Conserved Areas Congress (Apac) in Kigali, Rwanda.<\/p>\n

Illeka said the objective of the Covid-19 facility is to mobilise resources from various donors to ensure the continuation of anti-poaching activities, the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict, the preservation of natural resources and management of wildlife, and to minimise job losses in the CBNRM sector.<\/p>\n

She said although there has been significant improvements in the sector as travel restrictions have now been relaxed, support is still ongoing \u2013 particularly to community-owned entities.<\/p>\n

Ileka said 86 communal conservancies and 23 community forests, with a total number 1 608 members, have received financial support from the Covid-19 facility.<\/p>\n

A total of 58 tourism enterprises in conservancies have received financial assistance from the facility, while 86 conservancies and 40 community forests have received masks, hand sanitisers, and Covid-19 awareness information.<\/p>\n

Ileka said this is yet another example of Namibia’s uniqueness in stakeholder collaboration in conservation and protected area management, and is an incredible achievement which would not have been possible without long-term partnerships.<\/p>\n

The director of wildlife and national parks in the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Bennett Kahuure, spoke at the panel discussion on promoting effective and equitable networks of protected and conserved areas in Africa.<\/p>\n

He said in Namibia communal conservancies are self-governing and democratic entities, run by their members, with fixed boundaries agreed with adjacent conservancies, communities or land owners.<\/p>\n

He said both communal conservancies and community forests exist to protect wildlife habits, and game and forest guards from the local communities are employed to patrol their areas, deter poachers and assist the ministry to monitor wildlife numbers during game counts.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, conservancies and community forests derive livelihoods through tourism, trophy hunting, and the sale of indigenous natural products, he said.<\/p>\n

Kahuure said there are currently 86 registered communal conservancies and 43 community forests, covering 20% of the Namibia’s land surface, and 59% of communal land.<\/p>\n

The Apac congress, which was held from the 18 to 23 July, saw the establishment and launch of a pan-African Conservation Trust (A-Pact), which will see African countries striving to put in place a sustainable financial mechanism for the continent’s protected and conserved areas.<\/p>\n

According to the Union for the Conservation of Nature’s world commission on protected areas, the overarching objective of the congress was to bring together African leaders, citizens and interest groups to discuss conservation of the continent’s protected areas.<\/p>\n
