ELIGARDT Haipa, a teenager who was earlier this year crowned Miss Valentine at one of the rural schools in the North, has established a charity to help keep the girl and boy child at school.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Eligardt was crowned Miss Valentine for the Kapembe School in the Eheke Circuit.<\/p>\n

The Shalongo Charity Foundation was named after Haipa\u2019s grandmother and her \u201crock and pillar of assistance\u201d.<\/p>\n

She stated that keeping a Namibian child in school is a collective responsibility of both the government and the society.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the charity\u2019s launching ceremony on Friday, Aligardt said that her initiative is strictly for the benefit of the school.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made the decision to help the school netball team to practice. I also want to help needy learners at our school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Addressing the event, Kristoph Namawe, who manages the charity, said that many school children have a poor understanding of the purpose behind assistance. However, it\u2019s not done with any aim of shaming learners, but giving a helping hand to them and keep them in school.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchool dropout and teenage pregnancy is very high here. We want to create awareness on the issue,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

School principal Andreas Amesho welcomed the initiative saying that it is indeed a good humanitarian project that will help the needy girls and boys.<\/p>\n

He pledged to continue the initiative. However, he said making it a success requires community involvement at all times.<\/p>\n

Established in 1970s the school is home to 346 learners in grades 8 to 11.<\/p>\n
