THE Namibian Newspaper Cup is back after an absence of three years and Oshakati is ready to lay on a blockbuster event.<\/p>\n

The Oshakati Independence Stadium has been renovated and is in top shape to welcome Namibia’s 14 regions who will compete in the long-running under 20 football tournament, as Philip Dala, the Namibia Football Association’s regional representative explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe preparations are all in place and we cant wait for the Namibian Newspaper Cup to start. We are expecting a lot of people because there are other events in the north as well, like the Ongwediva Trade Fair and some party political rallies. But the most important one is the Namibian Newspaper Cup which is now finally back after three years. The people love the newspaper cup, they are very excited and can’t wait for it to start,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stadium was renovated with financial support from the Oshakati Town Council who came on board when we won the bid a few years ago. The grass was dead, but they fixed it up and now it looks beautiful,\u201d he said, adding that the Oshakati Town Council has also built a new netball court for the netball tournament.<\/p>\n

The Newspaper Cup will get underway with a street parade to the stadium tomorrow morning, while the tournament will officially start at 07h30 with the opening ceremony and welcoming speeches.<\/p>\n

The action gets underway at 0815 when \/\/Kharas take on Kavango West, with group matches continuing throughout the day till about 21h00 at night.<\/p>\n

The group matches continue on Saturday, starting at 08h15, while the group stages will be concluded with a women’s exhibition match between an Oshana women’s team and Tura Magic Ladies at 17h00.<\/p>\n

The football semifinals will conclude the evening’s entertainment, starting at 18h30 and ending at about 21h00.<\/p>\n

Two football matches are scheduled for Sunday, with the third place play-off scheduled for 10h00 and the final for 12h00.<\/p>\n

The netball tournament starts at 08h00 tomorrow and will continue with group matches on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The semifinals are scheduled for Sunday morning, starting at 08h00, to be followed by the bronze medal match at 11h00 and the final at 12h00.<\/p>\n

The Namibian will provide extensive coverage of the tournament on its various digital platforms.<\/p>\n

We will provide score updates and photos as well as video interviews on our social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, while we will also provide live streaming of selected football and netball matches on our Facebook page.<\/p>\n

Besides that we will have daily reports and photo and video updates on our website.<\/p>\n

According to the provisional livestreaming schedule there will be live broadcasts on The Namibian’s Facebook page for most of the day, while some football and netball matches will also overlap, running at the same time on two different live video links.<\/p>\n

After the long weekend, The Namibian will bring out an eight-page supplement with a review of the tournament and lots of photos in next Tuesday’s newspaper.<\/p>\n
