{"id":28435,"date":"2022-08-25T16:40:07","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T16:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/stock-theft-threatens-namibia-zamibia-relationship"},"modified":"2022-08-25T16:50:32","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T16:50:32","slug":"stock-theft-threatens-namibia-zamibia-relationship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/stock-theft-threatens-namibia-zamibia-relationship","title":{"rendered":"Stock theft threatens Namibia-Zamibia relationship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Liselo-Kamenga Anti-Stock-Theft Association (Likasta) has called on the governments of Namibia and Zambia to urgently intervene to curb the alarming rate of cross-border stock theft if they want to maintain a healthy relationship between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>THE Liselo-Kamenga Anti-Stock-Theft Association (Likasta) has called on the governments of Namibia and Zambia to urgently intervene to curb the alarming rate of cross-border stock theft if they want to maintain a healthy relationship between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>Likasta was formed in 2021 by Namibian farmers in the Zambezi region who are plagued by cattle theft on a daily basis, allegedly at the hands of Zambian nationals.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with the Namibian Police, the members of Likasta hope to curb stock theft by doing patrols and tracing missing animals with the resources available to them.<\/p>\n<p>Likasta chairperson Vincent Siliye on Tuesday said the stock-theft situation in the region is getting out of hand, and that Namibian farmers are losing cattle worth thousands of dollars on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two countries should join forces to combat stock theft, because if left unattended, it will bring differences between the countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe as Namibian farmers are angry and frustrated because we are losing a lot of our animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a whole business for Zambian nationals to steal our cattle and resell them for peanuts. Mind you, farming with these cattle is our livelihood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Siliye said the main issue which the Office of the Prime Minister and the surveyor general should consider is the proper demarcation of the Namibian-Zambian border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe border is bushy and dense, so much so that one cannot tell whether you are in Namibia or Zambia. This makes it easier for thieves to cross into our country and steal from or import illegal items into Namibia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Siliye said through their collaborative efforts with the Namibian Police and other stakeholders, they have recovered 16 out of the 18 head of cattle which were stolen on 14 August from the Makanga area.<\/p>\n<p>He said they were recovered on 21 August at the Silumbu and Kapau areas in Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>The 16 head of cattle were repatriated from Zambia on Tuesday via the Katima Mulilo border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin a period of 10 days, the Namibian farmers lost almost 38 cattle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately we recovered 36 animals thus far. In a month, we risk to lose over a 100 cattle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not easy to recover these stolen cattle, because farmers have to spend thousands of dollars to trace and repatriate them. I recall when my 14 head of cattle were stolen, I spent about N$20 000 to trace them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The owner of the 16 repatriated head of cattle, Charles Sikwenda, says it is the first time he has recovered some cattle, saying he has lost about 21 animals due to stock theft over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven now I lost two head of cattle. We are farming to sustain our livelihoods, but at this rate we will be left with nothing,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Sikwenda appeals to the government to come to farmers&#8217; aid by deploying soldiers along the border.<\/p>\n<p>According to statistics provided by regional police spokesperson inspector Kisco Sitali, over 88 cases of stock theft were registered between January and August this year alone.<\/p>\n<p>He says the value of the stolen cattle are about N$370 000.<\/p>\n<p>He says between April and August, about 186 head of cattle were stolen, and only 88 were recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are a lot of animals which have been lost over that period of time from our farmers&#8217; kraals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do recover these animals in some instances.
