{"id":29223,"date":"2022-09-07T15:20:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T15:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/time-to-give-space-to-young-people-kawana"},"modified":"2022-09-07T15:20:00","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T15:20:00","slug":"time-to-give-space-to-young-people-kawana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/time-to-give-space-to-young-people-kawana","title":{"rendered":"Time to give space to young people \u2013 Kawana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>MINISTER of home affairs, immigration, safety and security Albert Kawana says it is time to give young people a chance to lead Swapo.<\/p>\n<p>MINISTER of home affairs, immigration, safety and security Albert Kawana says it is time to give young people a chance to lead Swapo.<\/p>\n<p>He yesterday confirmed his retirement from active politics in two years&#8217; time to The Namibian.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana is among four leaders who informed Swapo&#8217;s politburo they will not be available for positions at the party&#8217;s congress slated for November.<\/p>\n<p>The others are speaker of the National Assembly Peter Katjavivi (82), minister of agriculture, water and land reform Calle Schlettwein (68), and minister of gender equality, poverty eradication and social welfare Doreen Sioka (61).<\/p>\n<p>Schlettwein says he plans to venture into writing and photography.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana (66) yesterday said he informed Swapo&#8217;s politburo on Monday he would not be available for election to the central committee or ministerial position beyond 21 March 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think time has come really to give space to the youth,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana has served in various positions in the party, including being a member of Swapo&#8217;s military wing, the People&#8217;s Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan).<\/p>\n<p>The minister said he would be loyal to Swapo \u201cuntil I enter my grave\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking back, I propelled to parliament the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, I propelled the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca), I propelled the Whistleblower Protection Act, and I propelled the Witness Protection Act. These are the laws aimed at fighting corruption, and today these laws are really fundamental in Namibian society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana served as permanent secretary for 10 years before he was appointed as minister of justice for the first time in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>He also served as minister of presidential affairs from 2005 to March 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel I really played my part,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said when retired, he would spend his time expanding the Kalimbeza Rice Project at his village in the Zambezi region.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana&#8217;s tenure has not been rosy throughout.<\/p>\n<p>The minister and prime minister Saara Kugongelwa-Amadhila were among the politicians who led the Development Bank of Namibia into a debt of N$4 billion for a project that was not urgent.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana was also key in renewing and awarding long-term fishing rights allocations in 2020 \u2013 despite concerns that the scheme was largely a money-making scheme for the political elite.<\/p>\n<p>The former presidential affairs minister was also known for defending perks for presidents, including the N$80 million retirement mansions for former presidents.<\/p>\n<p>MR PHOTOGRAPHER<\/p>\n<p>Also confirming his retirement from politics is agriculture minister Calle Schlettwein (68), who said he has been planning to retire from politics at 70 \u2013 not when he is weak and incapacitated.<\/p>\n<p>Schlettwein serves in Swapo&#8217;s central committee and politburo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not getting any younger. When my term ends, I will be over 70 years and I think that is a good time to go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Schlettwein said that his decision not to make himself available is to create opportunity for young people.<\/p>\n<p>He said he served in public office for many years before he was appointed as deputy minister in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Schlettwein also served as permanent secretary in various ministries, including the Ministry of Finance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are serious that we want to rejuvenate the party, the best thing is to give others a chance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not stepping down now.
