One is aligned to Geingob and the other to Nandi-Ndaitwah.<\/p>\n<p>Geingob&#8217;s camp appears to include Kuugongelwa-Amadhila as party vice-presidential candidate, but her support is still fragile, with persistent information pointing to Kapofi actually being Geingob&#8217;s preferred candidate for vice-president.<\/p>\n<p>Other camps are surfacing, like that of Alweendo, who many young technocrats in government dubbed as &#8216;The People&#8217;s Choice&#8217; for the position of vice-president.<\/p>\n<p>Alweendo is considered an outsider to inner party circles.<\/p>\n<p>Former youth minister Jerry Ekandjo will be hoping to launch his fourth attempt at the biggest political prize in the land, which has eluded him since 2007, when he was allegedly told to step aside and make way for Geingob.<\/p>\n<p>The two were to lock horns in 2012 and 2017, with Geingob emerging on top at both congresses.<\/p>\n<p>Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun is potentially contesting for the position of deputy secretary general, hoping to be nominated by minister of labour, industrial relations and employment creation Utoni Nujoma.<\/p>\n<p>There are still sections calling for former youth league leader Elijah Ngurare to take the secretary general position.<\/p>\n<p>Some fear the move may be squashed since Geingob and his camp allegedly still consider him a rival.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary general Sophia Shaningwa this week declined to comment on the proposed removal of the Helmut amendments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a problem with talking to the media about politburo meetings. Bye,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>HOW NOMINATIONS WORK [SIDE BAR]<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow&#8217;s meeting is expected to start with the reading of the party&#8217;s politburo&#8217;s report, containing details of Monday&#8217;s nominations.<\/p>\n<p>The central committee (CC) \u2013 being the highest decision-making structure \u2013 will either endorse, nullify or add nominations.<\/p>\n<p>The next agenda point will be nominations, during which the floor is opened for members to add or nominate more names for the positions of vice-president, secretary general and deputy secretary general.<\/p>\n<p>Swapo rules dictate that a position such as that of vice-president should be contested by a maximum of four people (two women and two men).<\/p>\n<p>In this case, Nandi-Ndaitwah and Kuugongelwa-Amadhila may occupy two spots, unless Pendukeni Iiuvula-Ithana comes into the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Five men could fight it out for the two spots.<\/p>\n<p>They could include Kapofi, Alweendo, Ekandjo, minister of environment, forestry and tourism Pohamba Shifeta, and Tobie Aupindi.<\/p>\n<p>If all are nominated, three would have to be eliminated by way of a secret ballot.<\/p>\n<p>AMENDMENTS DEFENDER<\/p>\n<p>Former Cabinet minister Helmut Angula, associated with the restrictive amendments, is still against removing the rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is five years down the road, why now?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the objective of the amendments was to prevent the capturing of the party by certain individuals, not to block the youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemoving them can only be interpreted that they do not want the women to succeed to the top,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to backfire, because you misled the women all along that it was going to be their chance for the throne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GEINGOB&#8217;S WISH LIST<\/p>\n<p>President Hage Geingob&#8217;s preferred Swapo successor should be inclusive, non-tribalist, respected and a credible 2024 candidate who can handle war veterans&#8217; problems.<\/p>\n<p>Sources say the president has said this to several people.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the person should be able to manage generational transition and work with him the same way Geingob is currently working with former presidents Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba.<\/p>\n<p>Former Cabinet minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana this week said: \u201cIf we don&#8217;t employ a mechanism to test the appropriateness of the candidates in the eyes of the public then it&#8217;s unfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DIPLOMAT BACKS NDAITWAH<\/p>\n<p>While Geingob is still making up his mind on his succession choices, several Swapo camps are allegedly calculating their chances of success.<\/p>\n<p>Kuugongelwa-Amadhila&#8217;s camp is said to have calculated how tight the winning margins are.<\/p>\n<p>Nandi-Ndaitwah&#8217;s links with Shaningwa has made her team strong.<\/p>\n<p>She is said to have a strong support base in southern Namibia.
