Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Namibian selectors have named a strong 16-man squad to represent the country at the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.<\/p>\n

THE Namibian selectors have named a strong 16-man squad to represent the country at the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.<\/p>\n

Gerhard Erasmus will captain the team, which includes 13 players who competed at Namibia’s debut T20 World Cup in the UAE last year, while there are three newcomers in opening batsmen Divan La Cock and Lohan Louwrens, and pace bowler Tangeni Lungameni.<\/p>\n

The squad is well balanced with depth in batting and bowling, as well as numerous all-rounders.<\/p>\n

Following the retirement of Craig Williams, La Cock and Louwrens have stepped up to claim the opening batter’s role with some impressive performances this year.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old La Cock starred in Namibia’s first ever series win against Zimbabwe in May when he scored 66 off only 43 balls in their first match, while he also put in some solid performances against Ireland A and at the recent Global T20 Namibia tournament.<\/p>\n

Louwrens, meanwhile, was Namibia’s star batsman in the series against Hong Kong, scoring 228 runs at an average of 76,00 and a highest score of 111.<\/p>\n

Other batters who can also open the batting include the experienced Stephan Baard and the up and coming Michael van Lingen.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old Nicol Loftie-Eaton has grown in stature as a batsman making the number three role his own after some fine performances, while the leg spinner has also developed into a fine all-rounder.<\/p>\n

So is captain Gerhard Erasmus, who has been Namibia’s most consistent batsman this season, while he is also a handy spin bowler.<\/p>\n

Namibia have several top all rounders to choose from in the middle order, including JJ Smit, David Wiese, Jan Frylinck and Ruben Trumpelmann, along with wicket keeper-batsman Zane Green, while Karl Birkenstock is back in the squad after a long injury layoff.<\/p>\n

Bernard Scholtz will lead Namibia’s spin bowling attack, which also includes Pikky Ya France, while Lungameni and Ben Shikongo complete the pace attack.<\/p>\n

The coaching staff has also been strengthened with former South African pace bowler Morne Morkel having joined the team as bowling consultant. Morkel joins his brother Albie Morkel, who is the assistant coach to national coach Pierre de Bruyn.<\/p>\n

Polly Negongo is the team manager, Hestelle Haccou is the logistics manager, Riaan Minnie is the performance analyst, Rudi van Vuuren is the team doctor, Kara Scheepers is the physiotherapist, and Wesley Vries is the media liaison.<\/p>\n

Namibia will play against Sri Lanka, the Netherlands and the UAE in the group stages, with the top two teams progressing to the Super 12 stage.<\/p>\n
