League 2 tour to Papua New Guinea when they thrashed the home side by 167 runs at Port Moresby yesterday.

Following two earlier victories against the United States, Namibia have now strengthened their position on the log, and although they still remain fifth, they have several matches in hand on the leaders and can soon move up.

Yesterday, Namibia elected to bat after winning the toss and posted a formidable 284 for four wickets, before bundling PNG out for 117.

Namibia got off to a steady start with Lohan Louwrens and Divan La Cock putting on 55 for the first wicket, before Louwrens was dismissed by Norman Vanua for 28 off 42 balls (3×4).

La Cock soon followed for 20, but Michael van Lingen and Stephan Baard bolstered the innings with a 53-run partnership, before Baard was out for a steady 21 off 48 balls.

Captain Gerhard Erasmus joined Van Lingen and the two put Namibia in charge with a great 162-run partnership at more than eight runs to the over.

Van Lingen went on to score 119 not out off only 107 balls, which included 13 fours and three sixes, while Erasmus kept the runs flowing with 68 off 55 balls (5×4, 2×6).

Vanua was PNG’s best bowler, taking three wickets for 47 runs off nine overs.

PNG’s innings got off to a dramatic start as Ruben Trumpelmann dismissed Lega Siaka for a golden duck, and they could not recover as Namibia’s bowlers tightened the screws.

Spinner Bernard Scholtz continued his fine form of late as he cut through PNG’s middle order, taking three wickets in quick succession to leave the home side reeling at 34/4.

Jan Frylinck dismissed Sese Bau for 6 and Charles Amini for 27, and when Erasmus dismissed Simon Atai for 2, they were in deep trouble at 56 for seven wickets.

Vanua led a brief fightback, scoring 38, while Chad Soper added 12 and Damien Ravu 10 further down the order, before the whole team was out for 117 off 42,4 overs to hand Namibia a commanding 167-run victory.

Scholtz was Namibia’s best bowler, taking 3/21 off 10 overs, while Frylinck took 2/1 off three overs, and Nicol Loftie-Eaton 2/30.

On Saturday Namibia beat USA by 68 runs after scoring 254/5 and then restricting the USA to 186/7.

Erasmus (87 from 72 balls), Louwrens (57) and Baard (53) were Namibia’s top batters, while Scholtz (19/3 off 10 overs was their best bowler.

Two days earlier Namibia also beat the USA by 79 runs after scoring 176 (La Cock 48), and then dismissing the USA for 97 (Scholtz 3/5 off 8,5 overs).

With the victory, Namibia remain fifth on the log on 24 points from 21 matches, but they are now closing in on fourth-placed UAE who are on 27 from 26 matches, while the top three teams are now also within striking distance.

The USA are third on 29 points from 32 matches, Scotland are second on 40 from 28 matches, and Oman lead the log on 44 points from 36 matches.

Namibia have one more match remaining on their PNG tour when they take on the home side again today.

Following
